Learning Drums Lesson - 16th Note Triplets Video Lecture - Learn how

this lesson is all about learning to
play a new type of note called sixteenth
note triplets
they are a new type of subdivision which
means that once again will be
subdividing the main pulses of our bar
into smaller faster notes here's a bar
of quarter notes on the snare followed
by a bar of sixteenth note triplets or
sextuplets as they're sometimes called
we know the name sixteenth note refers
to two beams across the top of the notes
and you'll also notice that you can
write this subdivision as either two
groups of three joined by an eighth note
beam or as a group of six sixteenth
notes all in all we basically have to
play six notes per quarter note and the
count should be 1 triplet 1 triplet 2
triplet 1 triplet 3 triplet 1 triplet 4
triplet 1 triplet or if you find that
tricky at first I would maybe try
higgledy-piggledy higgledy-piggledy
higgledy-piggledy higgledy-piggledy to
get things going

repeat this first exercise many times
with the click set to a low tempo and
then try playing bar of eighth notes
followed by a bar of 16th note triplets
a low technically speaking all the notes
in the second bar are the same it's
worth noticing that you can feel this
exercise where by the 16th note triplets
feel like a group of six or two groups
of three depending on where you place
the stress in your hands either feeling
quarter note pulse or eighth note pulse

as you gain confidence with these
exercises try increasing the temple very
slightly and repeat each exercise many
times these are great subdivisions for
starting to build some endurance skills
so stay relaxed and play round and round
for a couple of minutes maintaining a
good fluid motion when you're ready
try playing that last exercise around

we can even use this subdivision as a
groove for slow temples remember to
start this with two hands on the hi-hat
and play it like a regular two-handed
sixteenth note groove bringing your lead
hand across to the snare to play the
back beats on two and four exercise four
one two three four now

okay now we've got an understanding of
sixteenth note triplets or sextuplets we
can start playing some partials or part
of the group of six notes there are two
very common phrases to start with one
counted one and triplet another counted
one triplet and as we'll see one triplet
starts on the hand of our account and
the other on a number let's look at the
two phrases one at a time here's the
first phrase preceded by a bar of eighth
notes be very careful and make sure you
observe all the correct stickings as
it's very easy to end up on the wrong
hand with these next exercises here's

sixteenth note exercises we can start to
combine them into all kinds of
interesting phrases and groupings on the
drum kit try playing different partials
with groups of sixteenth note triplets
and in no time you'll have faster hands
and a few new tools for your toolbox
