Learning Drums Lesson - Rhythmic Subdivisions Video Lecture - Learn how

this lesson is about the relationship of
all the subdivisions we've seen so far
and it's also about learning to play a
new type of note called thirty-second
notes thirty-second notes are a new type
of subdivision which means that once
again will be subdividing the main
pulses in our bar into smaller faster
notes in this case eighth notes for each
of our quarter note pulses here's a bar
of quarter notes on the snare followed
by a bar of sixteenth notes played
one-handed followed by a bar of
thirty-second notes played two-handed we
know the name sixteenth notes refers to
two beams across the top of the notes
and you'll notice that the new 32nd
notes have three beams across the top
all in all we basically have to play
eighth notes per quarter note which is
twice as fast as sixteenth notes so it's
a good idea to play the sixteenth notes
one-handed and then interlace your non
lead hand into your lead sixteenth notes
to get thirty Seconds the count for 32nd
notes should be one e under and E and a
two E under under yonder three under
under yonder fully under under yonder or
if you find that tricky at first I would
maybe try using can I get a piece of
chicken can I get a piece of chicken can
I get a piece of chicken can I get a
piece of chicken to get things going
exercise want one two three four
repeat this first exercise many times
with a click set to a low tempo and then
try playing the whole exercise hand to
hand
using single strokes once you can hear
the sound of thirty-second notes
we'll play an exercise using our whole
table of subdivisions with a click
this will include quarter notes eighth
notes eighth note triplets sixteenth
notes sixteenth note triplets and now
thirty-second notes for now I'll count
the subdivision that is coming up during
a bars rest before we play it so we can
hear which subdivision is coming next
then in the following exercise I'll play
straight through the whole piece without
rests exercise two one two three four
one and two and three and four and one
triplet two triplet 3 triplet 4 triplet
1 e and a 2 e and a 3 E under for ye

many many times and when you think
you've got it all perfect go back and
play it some more times to really make
sure that it's very very accurate only

notice how when you get to their fastest
sixteenth note triplets and 32nd notes
you'll have to use two hands on the

getting to grips with all these
subdivisions and how they fit together
rhythmically is a key function for any
drummer learn how to transit from one
subdivision to another by playing
different types of subdivision
back-to-back with a click this could
either be in the form of grooves or fill

these last exercises are quite busy in
terms of jumping from one subdivision to
another and although it's great to push
your limits in terms of accuracy and
dexterity on the instrument don't forget
that when playing in a real musical
situation you should let the music
dictate what you play and that means
therefore choosing your subdivisions
wisely so as not to create conflict
between your drum part and the other
instruments try to practice these
exercises everyday with a click and also
make a habit of working out which pieces
of music use different combinations of
subdivisions to create tension and
release for example even when we're just
playing eighth notes in a verse section
and sixteenth notes in a chorus section
we achieve a kind of gear change which
appears to help move the song forward
without necessarily speeding up good
