Logic Pro X - Video Tutorial 38 - Chord Trigger MIDI FX Plug-in Video Lecture

welcome to episode 38 of my Logic Pro 10
video tutorial series
in this episode we'll continue on our
discussion of the MIDI plug-in effects
that are new to Logic 10 today we're
going to talk about the MIDI chord
trigger effect which essentially allows
you to play a single note on your MIDI
controller and trigger a whole chord so
just like we added the arpeggiator you
go to the MIDI effects insert here on a
software instrument click on that and we
are going to choose court trigger now
cord trigger used to be called cordon
memorizer at least if you use the MIDI
environment to add a court trigger it's
actually called a chord it was called
the chord memorizer in Logic 9 but now
we have this nice new interface to work
with if it makes creating chord triggers
a lot easier than we could in Logic 9 so
this this plugins relatively simple
basically what you have is the input on
the top and the output on the bottom and
for every key on the keyboard you can
save a different different chord so for
each MIDI note you trigger on your MIDI
controller there is a correspondent can
be a corresponding output chord so
there's two modes there's single mode in
multi mode multi modes much more useful
but I'll show you a single mode first
what I'm gonna do first is make sure
singles on and I'm actually gonna clear
all of the the triggers because it
actually automatically creates some
chords for you so right now if I just
play individual notes
it's just triggering individual notes
now in order to actually hear output we
need to make sure that it's a particular
key on the keyboard creates a chord or
even just a note on the output so what
I'll do here is I'll say c3 click on it
actually to say turn on learn first
click on it you'll see a red dot there
and then down here you can create any
set of notes you want so maybe I want to
create a sea
a seat below that maybe a G see down
here and then maybe I want like an E
flat a G another e flat so I've got this
big sort of a flat core or C C minor
chord actually that is stretched across
the keyboard so if I turn learn off now
every time I play C 3 I'm gonna get that
C minor chord now the thing is with
single mode
it actually transposes that chord that
we just made across the entire keyboard

the problem with that is I don't want
every single chord to be minor you know
maybe on some major some minor some
diminish some augmented whatever so
that's where the multi mode comes in so
turn on multi mode it allows you to set
a range for the or for your chord
triggers so what I'm gonna do is I'm
gonna set my range from C 3 up to G 3
and I'm gonna turn learn on click on the
key I want to add the chord to which is
gonna be C again create the chord down
here
similar chord what we had before and I
can click on the next note up D I can
create another chord
if you want to remove it up you just
click on it it'll take the node away go
to e-flat now
and then I'll do one on G here

nice G minor seven chord there now it
automatically created these two other
chords here even though I shortened the
the trigger key range you can just click
on any any court or any trigger note up
here and just hit clear it'll clear all
the notes from that chord so I can get
rid of the ones that I don't want I'll
turn learn mode off and there we go now
another little trick that you can do is
if you hold option you can actually
choose clear all it'll clear all the
chords in the keyboard I don't want to
do that but that's that's something you
can do so now when I play cc3d 3 E flat
3 and G 3 I'm actually going to get AC
minor chord ad minor chord an E flat
major chord in the G minor 7 chord that
stretched across the piano
and the other the other thing to keep
mind is that the other keys that are
outside of the trigger range you can
still play them normally as soon as you
hit one of those keys that has a cord on
it triggers the cord and by the way I'm
just using the pretty stock electric
piano patch here you can do this with
any instrument and now that I've got my
cords they only act the way I want them
you can save this setting as a preset
I'll just call this C D E flat G
electric piano doesn't save the
instrument just saves the chord
configuration close that out and let's
try to set this to music

another neat thing about this is that
instead of recording all of the notes of
each chord that's being played all logic
does is record the trigger note that
you've played so it makes editing a
little bit easier down the piano roll
editor because you only have to quantize
or change the velocity of one note
rather than a whole chord so now that
I've edited these notes let's give this
a listen so that's the chord trigger
