isn't NLP just hypnosis a student came
up to me and asked me that very question
at a recent training now here's the deal
I want to go with some textbook
definitions for you as a doctor of
psychology when I went back to school
and studied this I looked at the very
specific definitions that licensed
professionals that academics used so let
me tell you exactly what I understand to
be hypnosis hypnosis is a specific set
of tools and techniques to help you
enter into a trance-like state where
your conscious mind in layman's terms
kind of goes bye-bye
and communication is more open and
direct to the unconscious mind that's
what hypnosis is now I know other
websites and other textbooks and other
people may say something different that
hypnosis is the state of being in most
psychology textbooks it refers to trance
as the state and hypnosis as a tool to
get there
NLP as a set of tools and techniques has
no formal trance induction has no formal
hypnotic induction in other words NLP
doesn't use the same tools and
techniques that hypnosis does so then
the question becomes what is the
relationship between the two well
Bandler and grin Durr went in and
modeled a lot of the things that Milton
Erickson did including rapport so the
rapport techniques came from a person
who's considered to be a foremost expert
on hypnosis and hypnotic phenomena so
NLP did look at some of these behaviors
and model them to develop the tools and
techniques within NLP however when you
look at NLP alone it is not necessarily
or it is not specifically hypnosis when
we teach NLP especially the master
practitioner level we bring both of
these modalities together to help you to
integrate them and utilize them in
whatever specific form you need to so
for example I've had clients in the past
that would really benefit more from a
hypnotic induction to enter into that
trance state and therefore I might do
more hypnosis with them and yet another
client may come in and need that NLP
approach those specific tools and
techniques that we call NLP to get to
the results that they want so think of
each of them as a separate tool in your
toolbox a phillips-head screwdriver a
flathead screwdriver each of them are
gonna get a result that is very similar
the difference being that it's a
different tool
