I was recently teaching a practitioner
training in Los Angeles and a student
came up to me and said so when do we get
to learn how to tell if people are lying
with NLP and I went you've been watching
that TV show lie to me haven't you he
went yeah I love that show and I said
look that show is based on a real
individual who's actually able to tell
if people are lying to him now a lot of
the things that he does they are NLP
based I don't know if he's been formally
trained in NLP or not but they are based
on sensory acuity they're based on
looking at someone and seeing micro
muscle movements and shifts and yeah he
has pretty much become a human lie
detector but he's not using NLP alone
here's the deal he has learned certain
facial expressions and what they mean
from a statistical perspective and he
knows the averages and he's able to talk
to someone and using a sensory acuity
and all of the other data that he has
he's able to make an educated guess and
he's wrong sometimes I think there was
even an episode where he was wrong and
since everyone is believing that as long
as it's on TV it must be real then he's
not perfect either but here's the deal
NLP alone isn't going to get you to
become a human lie detector where
someone moves their eyes doesn't tell
you whether they're lying or telling the
truth it means that they're accessing
certain information in their brain now I
have a 12 year old son and he's going
through that teenage phase where he kind
of skirts around the issue now because
I've known him for well about 12 years
now i can tell certain physiological
markers using my sensory acuity and
remembering those things that hey
something's not right here with his
communication and I can dig a little bit
deeper and find out what's going on I
know when it's right to approach him I
know the physiology that he has where
he's opening up to wanting to talk about
certain things and I can tell the
physiology when he shuts down and
doesn't want to talk about it NLP is so
valuable as a parent to know when to
approach that individual it took me 12
years of watching his physiology seeing
that remembering it and having an LP
sensory acuity to get to the point where
I was able to say okay something's not
right here let me dig a little bit
deeper or something's going on let me
back off if I meet someone for the very
first time
I'm not going to know whether they're
lying or telling the truth by NLP alone
and it just doesn't work that way now
let me be clear anyone that tells you
that you can tell if someone else is
lying from NLP either one of two things
hasn't given you the full picture that
the training may involve other things to
help you understand that or number two
they may not have a full understanding
of what it takes to read people and to
have that sensory acuity as to whether
or not you can tell if someone's lying
so to be very clear NLP alone as a set
of tools and techniques is not going to
teach you how to tell if someone is
lying or not NLP plus a variety of other
things is going to assist you in
beginning to get more sensory acuity and
learn how to see those subtle shifts
with people and know whether or not you
should like with my son approach or back
off or if something's not right here and
dig a little bit deeper that's what NLP
will give you
