PSpice Tutorial - DC Transient Simulation Charging a Capacitor Video Lecture - Electronics Programming

hey guys so this is a new video series
I'm starting with some simple example
circuits going from the very very basic
circuits like if you know nothing about
or Kioto pspice and explaining how those
circuits work to modern or intermediate
and advanced circuits for those who are
really trying to get some complicated
designs going okay so here's the first
simple circuit and pspice analog 80 it
is a capacitor they're charges over time
and this is what the circuit looks like
this is an example circuit that you can
find in your CAD like software or a
piece by student software it's there
doesent the same thing you can also find
this example circuit in the free trial
30-day trial of four CAD capture or PCB
editor
so let's recreate this circuit with
OrCAD capture see is open put a file new
project then under a new folder or
location make sure you select something
that has a folder that you want already
and call it let's say example one for
e^x wanna make sure a pspice analog or
mixtape new is chosen yeah we'll go in a
blank project
and those are just getting started with
quartet Kapture
and spice so I'm gonna maximize this
window here and this place part below is
usually visible but a case it's not you
just go over here to place part and then
add your libraries is needed your
libraries are found in the pspice folder
down here in this hierarchy so make sure
it's in like that
the control a to select all of these
piece spice and april's libraries and
then type C in your part search here and
enter tops up to your cursor click r for
rotate on your keyboard hit P is a
shortcut to place your part and hit R in
this window then enter to attach a
resistor okay I'll just type in a VDC
hit enter right click and move next
let's place a ground okay
and I'm going to wire this circuit

so all I'm doing is recreating the
example circuit that already comes with
the software just so you see how the
engineers did it right-click and choose
and wire I'm gonna double click on this
BDC make it 5 volts 1 kilo ohm resistor
in 1 nano farad capacitor alright now
it's time to set up the simulation put a
piecewise new simulation profile it's
called a DC transient create now I want
my analysis type to be time domain
transient general settings I set this to
10 microseconds that's a you there no
maximum step size click apply click OK
and now lastly I want to place a voltage
marker but a piecewise markers choose
voltage level place it right above this
capacitor right click and choose n mode
notice this is grayed out but that's
fine we haven't run the simulation yet
now this window is from the other
project simulation I'm going to close
this but a pspice oops cancel the spice
run the simulation and now we open up
this window what happens well we won't
get quite what here you saw in the first
simulation then though it'll be a
flatline the entire time why is that how
did they manage to get a nice curve at
the beginning well I'll show you close
this window it has to do with the commit
initial condition of the capacitor so
you want to double click on this
capacitor there's no initial condition
set let's set it to zero
starting with time at t 0 this is in
reference to like if you're doing your
circuits lecture or looking in a book
where it says the voltage level for a
capacitor or at time equals zero - this
is just before time starts so to speak
just before the capacitor starts
charging before it even gets exposed to
the voltage that's on the left side of
that resistor so click Save
underneath under this initial freezers
position or zero initial condition is
absolutely no charge now let's see what
happens when you run the simulation
again if there's no charge going on
through this capacitor current is
allowed to flow to a certain degree and
the capacitor starts to charge with a
change in current that C DV DT kicks in
and it starts to charge the capacitor
till it gets to that five volt voltage
and then once it gets charged back it
stays at the five volts and that's how
that first simulation profile came to be
you have to set your capacitors initial
condition to zero and that's how that
port's alright so if you have any
