Shopify Niche Tutorial - Understanding Seasonal Popularity Video Lecture | Shopify tutorial: Build your Shopify Store (English) - E-Commerce

hey what's going on guys this is Jake
with casual e-commerce and in this video
we're gonna be going over how what time
of year it is can affect the amount of
sales you're generating in your store

all right so in this video I just wanted
to quickly go over something that not a
lot of people mention and that's that
depending on what time of year it is it
can actually affect the amount of sales
you're gonna get or at least the
potential of sales that you can get
depending on what niche you're in so
we're just gonna go through a few
examples on Google Trends to show you um
how a lot of niches a lot of big niches
can be really seasonal and then how some
niches are not seasonal so it's just
something to keep in mind depending on
one that you're going into so obviously
this isn't to deter you from certain
niches because all of the niches we're
gonna be going over are going to be
really big stuff that you can be in
year-round but at the same time some of
them are gonna be more popular during
certain times of the year then other
times of the year so it's good to know
and it's good to know how to plan your
strategy around it so when you're doing
this research this is something you want
to look at you're gonna look at not only
how popular is it overall because a lot
of these obviously you're going to
notice there are pretty no-brainer
niches as in their popularity overall
but it's good to look to see which times
of the year they're more popular than
others so that way you can either ramp
up or turn down your market accordingly
so let's go ahead and look at a few
examples so the first one we have is
phishing so you can see this is Google
Trends graph of phishing over the last
five years so you can see the chart
pretty much is very gradually up and
down and those same time of year so
around May to August and then if we go
to May to August and it's pretty much
every single year between May and August
is when
the most searches are for fishing
worldwide and then you can see between
like September and February it's about
the same that's one of the searches to
get lower so you can see that the
fishing niche takes the same trend where
more people are interested in fishing
and a certain part of the year and
they're less interested and another part
of the year so let's go through a couple
more examples of this and then tell you
how you can work around it so there's
another one here it's hunting and you
can see this graph looks really similar
it just goes up down up down up down so
this is another seasonal niche but you
can see it peaks in November and it hits
its lows around April May Peaks in
November lows around April May Peaks in
November so it's the same thing it's
really predictable every year and I mean
I'm sure we could go back to even older
so all the way back to 2004 and you can
see it's extremely predictable it goes
up and down up and down up and down in
the same exact pattern so let's take a
look at another example
so hiking you can see it's the one doing
the same thing so it's going up down up
down up down you can actually see
there's a slight increase in hiking
overall so while it's still increasing
and decreasing at the same time points
every year it seems to be in a slight
uptrend it's starting to get on higher
highs so if you've ever analyzed stock
charts before you view this as kind of a
bullish sign because it keeps making
higher highs so what that would mean is
that possibly hiking is an interest that
seems to be growing in popularity
worldwide because you can see the
interest high over here was 64 and then
its most recent one that hit 100 so you
can tell this is something that's
growing overall however it still has the
seasonal rise and fall rise and fall so
let's look at one more example of a
seasonal one so you can see surfing this
has a rise and fall it always peaks in
July peaks in July peaks in July peaks
in July peaks in July so you can see
this niche is about same with the rise
and fall rise and fall this one's a
little bit
different to where it just seems to have
one really big spike and then it's
pretty flat the rest of the time but it
still has peaks and then plateaus peaks
and then plateaus and unlike hiking you
can actually see that this one is making
lower highs so once again if we're
analyzing a stock chart you would view
this as a bearish sign which would mean
that it's most likely going to keep
making lower highs which means that the
trend overall worldwide is going down so
that would mean if I'm looking at this
now this is obviously just one parameter
but if I'm debating between surfing and
hiking if it's me personally I'd rather
get in the hiking niche because it seems
to be growing overall while the surfing
that seems to be losing interest now
obviously this is just the Google
searches I'm sure the surfing niche is
really big and you cannot do fine in it
but this is just one parameter that you
would you know take into account when
doing your niche research but that's for
another video the point of this is just
to be able to recognize these rise and
Falls so now let's look at a couple
niches that don't have these rise and
Falls so now we can just look at yoga so
you can see yoga I mean there's a couple
Rises but they're not like super
consistent with any time they're just
random spikes so you can see yoga over
the past five years just been slow and
steady growth which makes sense because
yoga I mean you can do it outside but
it's something that you can pretty much
do indoors and therefore it's not really
gonna be affected by bad weather or
anything
unlike surfing hiking hunting and
fishing they're all outdoor things so it
makes sense that they're more seasoned
and when yoga can be done inside so it
makes sense that it stays pretty
consistent throughout the year so this
is so if you were in the yoga niche you
wouldn't really have to worry about
making a strategy based on the time of
year it is you know other than you know
basic holiday sales and stuff like that
but you wouldn't have to tailor your
strategies based on where the interest
levels are throughout the year and the
same thing to go for a niche like cat so
you can see cats remains pretty steady
throughout a five year period and then
same with dogs other than this random
spike I'm not really sure
what happened there so actually give you
a pretty clear idea what the difference
is between niches that are seasonal that
rise up and down throughout the year in
terms of interest level and then niches
the don't so we'll come back to a season
one real quick like hiking because I
want to go over a few quick points and
the first one is just because something
seasonal like hiking it doesn't mean you
shouldn't go into the niche because
hiking is obviously something even if it
slope at its low points it's still
really popular for one there's still
always gonna be different areas in the
world where people are hiking year-round
for two and for three just because a
niche isn't and it's peak popularity all
year-round doesn't mean that you
shouldn't go into it it just means that
you may wanted to adapt your strategy
accordingly in regards looking at this
chart and seeing when it's performing
better so easy example I'll try and
figure out what time period that the
interest in your specific niche is
peaked and then I would want to push
really hard during that time period so
for hiking between June July and August
it seems to be at its peak so for the
summer months I would be pushing ads
harder than usual I would be launching
more products essentially you're just
going to try and go more
balls-to-the-wall
during the up months and maybe use the
Down months - not necessarily obviously
you're not going to stop advertising and
do stuff like that but during the out
months there's going to be a lot more
potential for making more money so this
is when you're gonna make your big
pushes this is when you should be more
aggressive when you should be testing
out as many products as you can maybe
raise your ad budget try new forms of
advertising because during those
sections of the year when the popularity
is up you're gonna have an easier time
selling than the sections of the year
when the popularity is down now
obviously niches like this like hiking
and hunting and stuff there's super
popular issues that are always gonna be
around so you can sell these products at
any time of the year I don't want to
discourage you from selling them when
other times of the year I just want to
make you a
where that you're gonna have an easier
time selling them during the times of
the year where the interest level
globally is at its peak and this is when
you should take the biggest advantage
this is when you should have sales and
things like that and I'll run as many
ads as possible
so this is something I've never really
seen anyone cover before and it's not
like a huge groundbreaking philosophy or
anything but it is something you should
know
when going into a niche so whenever
you're thinking of a niche are going
into a niche or if you're already in a
niche and you don't know I head over to
Google Trends and figure out is your
niche a seasonal niche does it rise and
fall on popularity at the same time
every year or is it something like yoga
where it's just steady all the time and
if it's a seasonal niche trying to
adjust some of your strategy accordingly
to take advantage of the up times and to
compensate for the downtime so the bad
