Inkscape for Beginners Drone Icon Vector Tutorial Video Lecture - Inkscape

yes this is Nick with logos by Nick comm
and in today's tutorial I'll be
demonstrating how you can create this
vector drone icon slash logo sort of
design using Inkscape so let's get
started here in xscape by the way if
you'd like to know how you can make
Inkscape appear darkened with these
custom icons I'll link to that
information will be in the description
of the video so the first thing we want
to do here in Inkscape is go to file and
go to document properties which is down
here and we just grab that window we
want to set the display units to pixels
and we want to go to where it says
border and uncheck the box that says
show page border and that's going to
remove that border from the page right
there we don't need that at the moment
and we can close out of that and we'll
make sure we have the view set to custom
and we'll zoom in at 1 to 1 and then
we'll open up our align and distribute
menu with this button up here and we're
going to want less selected chosen from
that drop-down and then we'll open up
the Edit objects colors gradients and
Stroke menu with that button up there so
we have them both open so the first
thing we're going to do is create the
body of the drone right here I guess you
can call these the arms or the legs or
whatever to do that we're going to grab
these stars and polygons tool which is
right here and up here and from this
toolbar we want to have star instead of
polygon we want that set we want four
corners spoke ratio is 0.23 zero rounded
is zero point four four five zero and
randomized set to zero and once we've
done that we could hold ctrl and shift
in the keyboard and click and drag to
create our star slash polygon I'm going
to rotate this around so that the arms
are going vertically and horizontally
like that we don't want it like this or
that we want it just like that and I
have mine set to red because that's what
I was previously using I'm going to make
this a shade of green maybe something
like this maybe I'll come over here to
under the fill tab onto the HSL tab on
comes out to the s row slide that to the
left a little bit just to give that like
a bit of like a muted tone and I want to
give this an outline as well if you
notice what I did here in the thumb
gave it like a dark dark blue outline to
do that I'll just come down here to the
color picker and find the shade of blue
I want to use which is like right about
there and then I'll just hold shift and
click on that color and it'll give it an
outline or otherwise known as a stroke
and I'll come over here to the stroke
style and I want to set this to px for
pixels and for the width of this I want
to change this to about 12 see how that
looks now it looks pretty good I've set
it to whatever width looks good relative
to the whatever thickness looks good
relative to the the image itself like
here on my screen with my resolution
right now I'm currently using like 1920
by 1080 this looks pretty good
with your screen in your resolution it
might look different so just try things
out and see what works over here I want
to have rounded join and a rounded cap
and okay so the next thing we want to do
is create a circle so we'll come over to
the circles and ellipses tool and I'll
hold ctrl and shift and click and drag
to create a circle like that and they
come down here to the color picker slide
that all the way to the left and I want
to make this white and I'm just going to
take the opacity of this and drop this
down about in half so I can see the body
of the drone beneath it and I'll come
over to the Select tool and with that
selected I'm going to hold shift and
click on the out of the green object
here and just make sure we have that
centered on the horizontal axis and
click the button to center on horizontal
axis click off of it to deselect and I'm
just going to hold ctrl and just click
and drag this over to the right like
that so it's sitting over the arm of the
drone and what I want to do now is
duplicate that by hitting ctrl D I want
to bring the opacity all the way up and
I want to make the fill color of that
the same dark shade of blue that the
stroke is so I'm going to zoom in by
holding ctrl and rolling up on the mouse
wheel and I'm going to grab the dropper
tool which is over here or you can just
press f7 on the keyboard I'm going to
click on that blue area to make that
that shade of blue and then I'm going to
get rid of the outline by holding shift
and clicking the X and I'll come over
here to the Select tool let me zoom out
a little bit by holding ctrl and rolling
down the mouse wheel and then I want to
hold ctrl and shift in the key
and click-and-drag to scale this in to
about that side that's going to be the
point of where it connects to the arm of
the drone like what you see here that's
what that's going to be so what I want
to do now is hold shift and click on the
other circle and just hold control and
just click and drag it to the right a
little bit just to position that better
and I'll take the opacity and slide that
all the way to the right to bring that
all the way back up click off that
deselect everything and then I'll take
this circle right here I'm just going to
lower that one step so it goes beneath
the green object like that so that's the
viewpoint that's like the vantage point
we're going to have with this drone it's
going to be positioned so that we're
looking up at it into the sky and we're
seeing the body of the drone going up
towards the sky so what we'll do now is
I'm going to create these lines that
indicate motion so for that with this
with this circle selected you click off
of it to deselect it I'll click on that
just to make sure I have just that
circle selected I want to duplicate that
by right-clicking it and going to
duplicate and I'll turn off the fill
color by clicking on the X and what I
want to do now is come up here to this
little toolbar these little four little
boxes up here and this first box it says
when scaling objects scale the stroke
width by the same proportion I want to
make sure I have that turn to off we're
turning that off does is it ensures that
no matter how big or small I make this
stroke it will remain 12 pixels so if I
scale it up like that it'll adjust it so
that it's still 12 pixels or if I scale
it down like that it'll adjust it so
it's 12 pixels so that's I want that
turned off for this part of the tutorial
and what I want to do is just hold ctrl
and shift and grab one of these arrows
and scale it out about that much and I
want to change the width of this to half
of whatever the width of the other
strokes were because the the lines that
indicate motion aren't to be as
pronounced as the the lines of the edges
and everything I think it just looks
better that way so I'll cut that in half
16 6 is half of 12 soldiers right in 6
and that looks pretty good and what I
want to do is just take a little segment
off of this line right here and keep
that and get rid of the rest of it so
I'm going to grab the squares and
rectangles tool and I'll hold ctrl and
shift and click and drag to create a
square well you know what I may have to
make it's a color I'm going to make that
red we bring the opacity of that down in
half and let me just go to the Select
tool and delete that and start over
again
oops in case it didn't work for you as
well so I'll just hold ctrl and shift
like that and make a perfectly
symmetrical square we'll go to the
Select tool and I'll click on this again
to get the rotation handles and I'm
going to hold ctrl and shift and grab
this top right corner arrow and rotate
this clockwise one two three three steps
like that and we want to be holding ctrl
why are you doing that because if not
it's kind of you're just going to go
like free fall really nilly like that so
you wanted to have set degrees in which
it rotates so we hold ctrl to do that
and once we've done that we can just
take this in position that's right about
over here and hold shift and click on
this thin out outline on the outside of
the circle there and just make sure we
have it centered on the horizontal axis
and then we can go to path cut path and
then we want to come back to the stroke
style tab and again we just want to make
sure we have a rounded join and a
rounded cap and then we can click off it
to deselect everything and what that did
was that cut that into two pieces so we
can take this piece right here and just
press Delete on the keyboard to get rid
of it and now that's gone so I'm going
to create some more of these going on
the inside of the the drone blades here
to make it look like it's there spinning
to do that I'll click on this circle I'm
going to right click that and go to
duplicate and I'll make the width of
this stroke again we're going to go to
six we're going to get six pixels turn
off the fill hold ctrl and shift and
scale that in about that much that's
pretty good now I want to duplicate that
again you make that a little bigger
that's good I'll duplicate that again by
right-clicking it and going to duplicate
hold ctrl and shift and scale it in like
that
it's pretty good and again we want to
take just the segments out of the sides
here like we did with this object so to
do that I'm going to grab the squares
and rectangles tool again let me just
click off the graphic and deselect
everything and I want to make this red
again so I'm going to click on the color
red and then I'll hold ctrl and shift
click and drag to create a square like
that another symmetrical square we'll go
to the Select tool click on this again
to get the rotation handles and then
hold ctrl and again one two three three
steps clockwise like that it'll take
this in position that's right about here
and what I want to do now is duplicate
that by I'll right-click that and go to
duplicate or any easier ways to just hit
ctrl key on the keyboard and then I'll
hold ctrl and just move this over here
to the right and then I'll hold shift
and click on the other red object so we
have them both selected and go to path
Union and then I want to hold shift and
click on the circle here and make sure
we have it centered on the vertical and
horizontal axis so go ahead and center
that up and then we can click off it to
deselect everything and I want to take
this red object right here that we just
created
I want to duplicate that again by
hitting ctrl D and then I'm going to
hold shift and click on this circle here
the smallest one on the inside and go to
path cut path and then click off the
graphic to deselect everything and now
we can do is should we take this object
and just press Delete on the keyboard to
get rid of it the same thing with this
object just go ahead and press delete to
get rid of it and then we'll take this
red object here hold shift click on the
the outside circle right there and go to
path cut path and again click off the
graphic to deselect it get rid of that
piece get rid of that piece we're just
clicking delete on the keyboard and I
want to take these if you notice these
these motion lines here are going above
the body of the drone so you want to
take that line and slower at one step
click them on this as lower selection
one step we click it a second time and
then it goes beneath the green object I
want to do the same thing with the other
line okay to click that once and that's
pretty good so what I'll do now is I'll
click and drag over all of this
not all of it all of the the fan blades
here not the actual body so we have all
of them selected oops
click and drag over all of those and I'm
going to group them together with the
group button and I'm going to bring the
opacity down a little bit so I can see
the object beneath it and I'm going to
hit ctrl D to duplicate it and then I
want to flip it horizontally by pressing
this button up here or you can just
press H on the keyboard and then I'll
hold ctrl and just move this off to the
right until it's sitting in a roughly
similar position as this is over here
and then we get hold shift and click on
the other object and bring the opacity
all the way up and group them together
and then hold shift and click on the
green object and center it on the
vertical axis and the horizontal axis
then click off to deselect everything
and now we can take this object here
right click that and going to duplicate
and we want to rotate this 90 degrees
either clockwise or counter counter
clockwise it doesn't matter just ropes
rotated 90 degrees and we end up with
that right there and then I want to hold
shift and click on the other set of
blades so we have them all selected and
just ungroup them with the ungroup
button we'll just go ahead and ungroup
those and I'm going to zoom out a little
bit by holding ctrl and rolling down the
mouse wheel and what I want to do now is
I want to bring this green object up to
the top but without it going above the
blue circles here so to do that I'm
going to click and drag over all of this
bottom circle right here and then hold
shift and click on this blue circle to
deselect it and I'll send all of that to
the bottom click the button that says
lower selection to the bottom and we end
up with that right there if you notice I
I'm glitching here okay there we go we
got a lot of glitches with the Inkscape
sometimes so we do the same thing to the
rest of these fan blades I'll click and
drag over all of this one hold shift
click on the blue circle to deselect it
send it to the bottom there you go the
same thing up here send it to the bottom
and finally same thing over here send it
to the bottom and we should be all
finished we have now completed our drone
icon but one last thing I'd like to
point out is that let me click and drag
over all of this
together the group on up here group
selected objects if you notice if you
want to resize this thing if you hold
ctrl and shift you go to scale it down
and resize it it's going to look all
messy because it keeps the strokes
within the same size regardless of how
big it is so let me undo that and again
I'll show you even if you want to scale
it up you kind of lose the effective
because those lines stay the same size
this is what I was mentioning earlier
with this button up here it means this
ensures that the stroke stays the same
size the same thickness no matter how
big or small you make it if you go ahead
and turn that on now you can scale this
thing and the thickness of the stroke
will scale in proportion to the rest of
the graphics so that's how you can go
about doing that with Inkscape so if you
