Inkscape for Beginners Origami Boat Tutorial Video Lecture - Inkscape Design

in today's tutorial I'll show you how to
create a vector style paper origami boat
similar to what you see here on my
screen and at any point in this tutorial
you could look down at the bottom
left-hand side of the video right here
to see which keystrokes and mouse clicks
I'm using so with that being said let's
close out of this and get started so the
first thing we'll do in Inkscape is come
up to view and make sure you have custom
selected and then we're going to zoom in
at 1 to 1 and then we'll open up our
edit objects colors gradients and Stroke
menu by clicking this button right here
and the first thing we'll do is create a
polygon so come over to the stars and
polygons tool and click on that and from
this menu up top here you make sure you
have regular polygon selected corners
should be three rounded a zero and
randomize zero and once you have those
values set come over to the canvas hold
ctrl and click and drag to create our
triangle now make sure you have it
positioned like this with the flat with
the flat part of the triangle facing
horizontally on the bottom coming up to
a point at the top and once you have
that created let's go over to the arrow
and let's click over here and bring this
over here to the side of our page and
let's come over to the opacity lever and
let's drop that in half and then we'll
come up to the edit pads node we'll
click on that and then we'll go to
object will it'll get a path object to
path and then we'll go to edit duplicate
and we'll turn that blue now take this
top node right here hold ctrl on your
keyboard and take this top node and hold
ctrl and click and drag it down to about
there right about right about there I'd
say a little more than halfway through
the shape and then afterwards we can go
to our bed z a pen let's click on that
tool and then let's come over here to
where it says snap to pad if I snap to
custom nodes we'll turn that on and
let's snap the cursor to this top point
right here and click on that and let's
bring this line out to about here
right about there click there and then
bring the line to this bottom left
corner over here and click and then
bring this line back to the starting
point and click on the starting point to
connect it all together now the next
thing we'll do is we'll connect the
cursor to this top
to corner over here click on that and
bring this line out about this much now
to about here and then click and then
connect this to here and click it on to
there and then bring it back to the
starting point and snap it all together
and we should end up with that shape now
let's go to our arrow and click on that
and let's hold shift in the keyboard and
click on the first shape that we drew so
we have both of those shapes selected
and then we can right-click it and go to
duplicate and up here on this top menu
or this should be a button that says
flip selected objects horizontally let's
click on that to flip that horizontally
and let's grab the object over by these
where these two corners meet right here
and let's just click and drag it over to
this side and snap it onto this corner
right there and then we can let go of it
now we can click off of the graphic to
deselect everything now let's take this
object up top here and send that to the
back of the graphic by clicking this
button this is lower selection to the
bottom go ahead and click on that and we
do the same thing with this one click on
that and then click on lower selection
to the bottom and click on that so the
first thing we'll do is we'll click on
this red out of this black triangle that
we originally drew and let's bring the
opacity on that all the way up and let's
make that a shade of red I'm gonna pick
this shade over here and then we're
going to give that a linear gradient by
clicking this button right here linear
gradient and if you're using Inkscape
version 91 there should be a little edit
icon down here in the bottom left I'm
using version 47 so I have this menu
right here it does the same thing it's
just in a different position so find the
edit button for me I'm gonna click the
edit button right there and if you're
usually Inkscape 91 this menu is gonna
pop up in this toolbar up here but in
Inkscape version 47 it pops up in a new
window so once you get this menu go to
the second stop click that drop down go
to the second stop and with the HSL tab
selected come down to the a column and
let's slide that all the way to the
right and then we'll come up to the L
column let's slide that to the left to
make that darker maybe about that much
and then we can close out of that and
then let's press G on the keyboard to
bring up our gradient handles and we'll
take this gradient on the left here
we'll click and drag that no to the top
and
snap it up there and we'll take this
node and bring it down to about snap it
to the top corner here and once you get
it there hold ctrl and click and drag it
down a little bit you want to down a
little further right about there and
then we'll come up here to this top node
and hold ctrl and click and drag that
down to about here just like that and
then let's go back to our arrow and
click on that we can actually turn off
the snap to custom nodes we don't need
that anymore and let's come to this this
piece right here at the very top and
let's go to stroke paint tab and let's
click the X button to turn the stroke
off and then let's come over to the fill
tab and click on linear gradient tool
and then go to the drop down select that
gradient we just created
press G on the keyboard to get our
gradient handles and let's bring this
right side over to the edge right here
and then bring this left side about
halfway through maybe a little more than
halfway through and we'll come and do
the same thing over here with the
gradient tool still selected you could
just click on that object and go to
stroke paint we could turn that off with
the X go to fill click on the linear
gradient tool to give that a linear
gradient and go to our drop down and
pick our gradient that we created and go
to the right hand side with a darker
shade is and bring that over to the edge
right here and then take this node on
the left and bring this over here maybe
a little bit more than halfway through
just like that now the next thing we'll
do is we'll go to our arrow tool click
on that and let's click this blue shape
right here and let's bring the opacity
on that all the way up and then we can
give that maybe we can make at about 40
percent gray and then we'll come over to
the stroke paint tab we'll turn that off
that's actually turned off already by
mistake and then we'll come back to the
fill tab we'll give that a linear
gradient and then click edit again if
you're using version 91 the Edit icon
will be down here I'm gonna click the
edit icon up here go to the drop down
select the second stop go to the a
column under the HSL tab we'll go to the
a column bring that all the way up to
the right so it's full opacity and we'll
go to the El column and bring that all
the way to the right so it turns white
then we can X out of that close that
menu press G on the keyboard to bring up
our gradient tool
and take this darker shade on the left
and put this at the bottom actually
going to put this about midway through
and then we'll take the lighter shade
and bring it to the top and we're gonna
we're gonna put it not it not right here
at the top and a little bit above it
like this once I get up here I'm gonna
hold control so the line goes straight
up and down I'll bring this up to about
here maybe a little higher than that
point at top at the top and then let's
click on this piece on the left right
here and let's go to the stroke paint
tab click the X button to turn that off
and we'll go to the fill tab click the
linear gradient button and then we will
select our grade a white gradient that
we just created we'll put the darker end
up at the corner here and then take the
lighter end and bring it to the side
right there and we'll do the same thing
over here click on this one go to stroke
paint turn that off go to the fill tab
turn the linear gradient on and then
from that drop down we'll select our
gray to white gradient and we'll take
the left node the darker shade and put
this up in the corner over there and
we'll take the this node down here the
white shade and bring this to the edge
over there just like that and then we
can click on our bezzie a pen and we're
actually going to use we're gonna we're
gonna turn snap to cuspid nose back on
and then what we're also going to turn
on snap to pen so those two should be
turned on and we'll snap the cursor to
the corner up here and then click and
bring the cursor to this corner down
here and click and then bring it up to
the left a little bit so it snaps I'll
show you
so it snaps onto the edge right about
here out about that much and then click
zoom back out and then bring it right
back up to the starting point just like
that and connect it all together now we
can go ahead and turn those two
functions off turn off snap 2 custom
nodes and snap the paths let's go back
to our arrow let's right-click this and
go to duplicate and come up here to
where it says flip selected objects
horizontally go ahead and flip it
horizontally and then bring it off to
the side over here and we're going to
turn on snap to custom nodes one more
time and we're gonna take this object we
just duplicated and snap it into the
corner over
they're just so it snaps in just like
that and then we can hold shift and
click on the first shape so we have them
both selected and go to path Union and
then I think we could turn off snap to
custom nodes once and for all and let's
go over to stroke paint let's turn that
off let's go to our fill tab let's give
that a linear gradient by clicking that
button we'll go to our I drop down and
choose our grade of white gradient
press G on the keyboard to get our
gradient handles we're gonna take this
darker shade and bring it towards the
bottom and then we'll take the lighter
shade and hold ctrl so it goes straight
up and down and we'll bring this about
half way through like that now let's go
to our arrow our select and transform
tool and let's hold shift and click on
this red triangle so we have both this
triangle and the red triangle selected
and we'll right-click it and go to
duplicate and then we'll go to path
difference and we'll turn that black and
let's give this a blur of about one
point so we give that a one point pleure
hit one and hit enter and then click on
this little white and gray triangle the
background and then right-click it and
go to duplicate and then hold shift and
click on the black triangle we just
created and let's go to object clip set
and which what it did as you can see
here is it created the illusion that
there's a drop shadow behind what's
supposed to be these two folded pieces
of paper kind of like that alright now
if you want we could take this entire
thing we can click and drag over this
entire thing and we can right-click it
and go to duplicate and go to path Union
and we could turn that black and then
let's click this a second time to get
our rotation handles and once you once
you do that a little crosshair will
appear we could hold ctrl on the
keyboard and click and drag this
crosshair straight down to the bottom
right there and then we can click this
another time to get our scaling handles
back and we can grab this top arrow and
let's just scale this down to about here
then we can click it again to get our
rotation handles and take this very top
arrow and let's just slide this to the
left like that
and then we can go come up here to where
it says lower selection to the bottom go
ahead and click on that and we can drop
the opacity on that quite a bit maybe
down to like 13% just to create somewhat
of a shadow behind it to make it look
like this paper boat is casting a shadow
so once you've done that you can click
and drag over the whole thing and group
it together and you can resize it
however you'd like and as you can see
we're pretty much finished so that's how
you can create an origami boat using
