Inkscape for Beginners Graffiti on a Brick Wall Video Lecture - Inkscape

in today's tutorial I'm going to show
you how to use Inkscape version 91 to
take an image of a brick wall and put
some graffiti on it as you see here on
my screen and in order to follow along
with this tutorial you'll need two
things first you'll need the font I used
here which is called soft sugar so go to
the link in the description and download
that font and install it before you open
Inkscape and then go to the link I
provided for this image as well and save
that image into a folder where you can
easily access it so once you've done
that we'll go ahead and get started so
I'm going to open up a new document and
the first thing we'll do is we'll open
up our align and distribute menu by
clicking that button make sure you have
last selected chosen from that drop-down
menu and then we'll go to edit objects
colors gradients arrowheads and other
fill stroke properties click that button
to open up that menu and we'll go to
file document I'm sorry file document
properties and uncheck that box and then
close out of that menu and we'll go to
view make sure you have custom selected
and then we'll go to zoom and we're
going to zoom in at 1 to 1 so the first
thing we're going to do is we're gonna
go to our text tool over here and then
click on the canvas click on the canvas
to bring up the cursor and for the sake
of this tutorial I'm just going to write
Inc 91 and then we can come up here to
our edit text tool you can open that up
and we could find that font we just
downloaded called soft sugar there it is
right there
click apply close out of that menu and
there you have that so let's go back to
the arrow and let's hold ctrl and shift
in the keyboard and grab one of these
arrows and let's just drag this out make
this you know make this bigger and then
we'll go to path object to path and then
we'll ungroup it using this button right
here and then we'll go to path Union and
now we're going to give this a gradient
of pink and orange so the first thing
we'll do is we'll come down here to our
colors we'll pick
a pink shade I guess something like that
maybe that it'll go with that and then
come up here to the fill tab and this
second box in that says linear gradient
we're gonna click on that and on this
button right here there should be a
button right here that says edit edit
gradient click on that and then up here
in this drop down menu you can see
there's two there's two stops now we're
gonna go to the second one we already
have our pink one up here we're gonna
click on this one right here and then
we're going to come over here and edit
this to make this orange so we're gonna
go to this row that says a and we're
gonna bring that all the way to the
right and then we're gonna come to this
top line that says H and we're gonna
come find a nice shade of orange maybe
something like that
okay then afterwards grab this handle
right here click and drag that down to
the bottom somewhere about there and
then take this one and bring it up here
and once you get it up here hold down
the control key on your keyboard so it
goes straight up and down and it's not
you know moving around like that you
want this going straight up and down
kind of like that and actually gonna
spread this out a little bit just to
give it a more fluid gradient there and
once that's done let's go back to our
arrow and click on that and we can
right-click this and go to duplicate and
come back down to our color toolbar and
let's make that black and let's come up
here to where it says lower selection
one step we're gonna click that once so
it drops down behind this one and then
while holding ctrl on the keyboard press
zero and that's gonna create a nice
little outset and we're gonna do that a
few more times I'm gonna do it a second
time third time four five
okay yeah five times works and then we
can go to edit duplicate we could turn
that green and come up here to where it
says lower selection to the bottom we're
gonna drop that to the bottom and we're
going to do the same thing again we're
gonna hit ctrl + 0 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
we're gonna make this one fairly thicker
11 and 12 should do it and once you get
to this point use the arrow keys in your
keyboard to bring this down a little bit
we're gonna make this we're gonna bring
this down to there and then we're gonna
go left bring it out to about there
that's a little too far maybe like that
and once you've done that click and drag
over the whole thing and then click it a
second time to bring up your rotation
handles and let's grab this handle on
the corner and just tilt it a little bit
kind of like that now next we're gonna
do is we're gonna come over to our
create rectangles and squares tool we're
gonna click on that and we're gonna
click and drag on the canvas and make a
nice long rectangle nice long thin
rectangle like that and then we'll take
this circle up top and we're gonna drag
this all the way down and then we'll go
to path object to path and then we'll
come over here to where it says edit
pads by node you're gonna click on that
and click and drag on these four nodes
right here this one this one this one
and this one without selecting these two
on the top and the bottom so we're just
gonna take our cursor and we're gonna
click and drag over those 4 you know
what I think I accidentally grabbed that
bottom one
no I didn't okay so once you have those
four selected come up here to the plus
button and we're gonna press that a few
times gonna go 1 2 3 4
yeah I'd say once you get about this
many new nodes in here that's that's
good
and then come over here to where it says
make selected nodes Auto smooth we're
gonna click that and then we're gonna
come back to our cursor and we're gonna
grab this second row of nodes right here
we're gonna ignore this first one let's
grab this second one
and just select those two and hold
control on the keyboard and click and
drag this off to the right just a little
bit not lis no abrupt like that but you
know kind of just took just a little bit
kind of like that and then we're gonna
go to the next row we're gonna skip that
and then we're gonna go to the next row
in that one we're gonna click and drag
over those hold ctrl and click and drag
this off to the left a little bit and
then we could skip this next row and do
the same thing with it with the
following row bring this off to the
right a little bit let me come over here
and do the same thing bring this off to
the little bit and then we can take this
one and do that and then we'll leave the
rest of these how they are and then you
can press f1 on the keyboard to go back
to our arrow tool so once you've done
that let's right-click this and go to
duplicate and let's hold ctrl on the
keyboard and click and drag this off to
the right and then come up here to where
it says flip selected objects
horizontally we're gonna flip that
horizontally or you can just press H on
your keyboard that'll also flip it
horizontally and then we're gonna grab
this bottom arrow down here we're just
gonna drag this up to about there and
then we're gonna right-click this and go
to duplicate hold ctrl click and drag
this out to about here press H on the
keyboard to flip that horizontally and
it will take this one bring this one up
to about there and then we can click and
drag over all three of these and we can
go to paths Union so once we've done
that we're going to take this and put
this at the bottom over here let's hold
ctrl on the keyboard and click and drag
to scale this down this is gonna
represent dripping paint coming off of
the wording here so we could do
something like that make that a little
bigger maybe do something like that and
let's take this second let's take this
and duplicate it and let's take this
second one and bring it over here and
let's flip that horizontally by pressing
H on the keyboard and we can put this
one all the way up here just so it
doesn't look like a symmetrical clones
copy I'm actually I move this up a
little bit
something like maybe put it closer
towards the edge there and once you've
done that click on this one and then
hold shift and click on this one and
then while still holding shift click on
the big green shape in the background
and let's unify them by going to path
Union okay so what we'll do next is
we're going to import our image of the
brick wall so let's go to file import
and let's go to wherever you have that
saved as there's the brick wall right
there click OK and here we have our
brick wall image let's actually drop
this to the bottom with this button
right here lower selection to the bottom
click that and let's press the minus key
on the keyboard to zoom out a little bit
so we can see we're doing and let's
click on just this green shape right
here and let's turn that white and then
let's click and drag over this entire
thing and group it together and let's
bring this towards the center of our
image here and then we could hold ctrl +
shift on the keyboard to scale this up
we'll make this about that big and what
we're gonna do next is we're gonna click
on just this you can click off of that
graphic to deselect everything or you
can press the button up here to make
sure you have everything be selected
then we'll click on this image of the
brick wall right here and then we're
gonna right click it and go to duplicate
and put your cursor right over where
about where that image was as you can
see here it's right about here in the
center so put your cursor with this
brick wall selected put the cursor right
about there and hold shift in alt and
then click again and you'll see a little
outline come up around that graphic you
should have this the second brick wall
on top and that graphic underneath it's
both selected and once you have them
both selected we'll go to object masks
and then say and as you can see it took
the texture of that brick wall and it
applied it to our little graphic we
created so that's a quick little
tutorial on how you can make a brick
wall with some graffiti on it you can do
the same thing with any other kind of
texture you can you know take a you know
like a picture of like a piece of paper
or you could apply this
would you know it's just one of many
ways you can do this with Inkscape so if
