Inkscape for Beginners Create a Farm Logo - Tutorial Video Lecture - Inkscape

alright so in this week's tutorial I'm
going to show you how to use Inkscape to
create a farm logo similar to what you
see here on my screen and the point of
this tutorial is to show you the
technique in which I use to go about
creating this icon right here just to
give you an idea of what you can do with
Inkscape and how you can apply these
techniques to your own work so let's get
started
open up a new document in Inkscape and
go to view have custom selected and then
go to zoom one to one let's go to file
document properties and lets punch
echoes to boxes and close out of that
menu and then we're going to open up our
align and distribute menu and then let's
open up our edit objects colors
gradients and Stroke menu and down here
the align and distribute make sure you
have less select and chosen from that
drop down menu and we'll be ready to
begin so to begin we're going to click
on our create circles and ellipses
button we're gonna click on that and
we're going to hold down control on the
keyboard and just click and drag on the
canvas right here to create a perfect
circle like that about that big and then
come up here to the fill tab and let's
let's turn that fill off let's click the
X button and come over to this stroke
tab and let's turn that on by clicking
the blue button and come over here to
stroke style and we're gonna make that a
15 point strokes and just type in 1 5 on
a second 1 5 why isn't it working
1 5 there we go I had a number a lot key
turned off alright so once you have a 15
point stroke let's come back over here
to our arrow and let's go up here to
where it says effect this box right here
this very first one that says when
scaling objects scale the stroke width
by the same proportion we're gonna turn
that off for this particular point of
the tutorial so we're gonna turn that
off and come over here to the width and
the height in between there there should
be a lock button we're gonna turn that
on and when I come over to the width and
we're going to make that 300 so just
write 3 0 0 and hit enter okay now we're
gonna right-click on this circle
and go to duplicate and then we're going
to make that we're going to make the
width of this 260 hit enter then right
clicking let's duplicate that and let's
make the width of that to 20 and hit
enter let's right click duplicate and
let's make the width of that 180 hit
enter then right click that duplicate it
again and we'll make the width of this
one 40 hit enter right click it one more
time I'm going to duplicate will make
that 100 even and we'll actually
duplicate this one more time right click
duplicate and we'll make this one 60 so
once you get to that point let's click
and drag over the whole thing and let's
Center them up come down here to the
align and distribute Center on vertical
axis Center on horizontal axis so you
can see we end up with something like
that now with them all selected like
like this still let's go to path stroke
the path path Union and let's come over
here to where it says edit pads by nodes
click on that and let's click and drag
over this whole thing and let's add a
node insert new nodes into selected
settings we're just going to click that
once and then we're gonna go back to our
arrow ok now let's go back up here to
where it says when scaling objects scale
stroke we'll turn that back on okay so
let's come over to the circle let's
right-click it that's gonna duplicate
and let's hold ctrl and just click and
drag it to the right out to about now to
about there you want the outer edge of
this circle just touching the inner edge
of this last circle it doesn't have to
be exactly touching just somewhere in
that general vicinity so we end up with
something like that now let's click on
this first circle let's right-click it
duplicate let's go to path break apart
paths Union
and then let's hold shift and click on
this second group of circles right here
and we'll go to path difference so we
end up with something like this and then
we're gonna hold shift and click the
other one so we haven't both selected
and we're a union unify them path Union
this you should end up with
something like this if you see you see
what's happening here on my screen I got
a little bit of a glitch happening where
it's filling in if you get this on your
screen a good way to get out of this is
good a bit edit has my notes click on
that click over all of them click and
drag over all of them and add an extra
node in there because sometimes that
does happen with Inkscape that's one of
the drawbacks of using an open source
vector program as opposed to like
illustrator you do you will run into
some glitches every once in a while all
right so now now we're good to go no
more glitch all right now let's come
over here out of the way and let's
create a box create a rectangle hold
ctrl click and drag on your screen to
create a symmetrical box like that let's
turn that red and come up to the stroke
paint tab and let's click the X button
to turn that off now let's come back
over to the arrow we'll click on that
and then we're gonna click on this box a
second time to bring up these rotation
handles and then we're gonna hold ctrl
and click and drag on these rotation
handles and just bring it around like
this so that these corners are facing
perfectly up and down like that now what
we're gonna do is we're gonna create
another box click on the Box button
again we're gonna go over this
just like that click and drag over it
you want the bottom of this box to be
going over these corners right here you
want them to overlap so once you've done
that hold shift and click on the two
boxes have them both selected and go to
path difference so we end up with a
little triangle like that what we're
gonna do is click on this this arrow on
the side right here and let's just bring
it in like that it's click and drag
bring it in like that and we're gonna go
to the top our we're gonna bring it out
like that we're gonna create our little
star little starbursts
pattern here in a second so you wanted
to be about that size and that you know
that length and that width just like
that so once you've done that let's
click on that a second time and it's
gonna bring up this little crosshair in
the section then the other center here
hold down your control key and click and
drag that cross all the way down to the
bottom of the graphic just like that and
then hold your ctrl key and click on
this top arrow right here and you'll see
you'll be able to drag this around like
that so bring it up to the top position
and while you're gonna we're going to be
holding the control key the entire time
we do this so bring it to this top
position like this and hit the spacebar
then bring it over and yeah one might
say bring it over one step that hit
spacebar and another step spacebar
another step spacebar and we're holding
control the entire time we're doing this
so just keep going around until you
finish up into a full circle it's
hitting spacebar every single time to
create a copy in the new position and
once you get to that last position just
let go of let go of the click and let go
of your control key and then you'll see
we've created this little starburst
pattern so let's zoom out so we can see
the whole thing and press the minus key
on your keyboard zoom out if that once
hit that twice so alright so now we got
we got a good view of the whole thing
you want to click and drag over this
whole thing and go to path Union and
then we're gonna hold shift and then
click on our two little circles over
here and we're gonna send them up
centered on the vertical axis and down
the horizontal axis and we're gonna
deselect everything by clicking that
button right there now let's come back
over here and press the 1 key on your
keyboard just to get to zoom back in and
let's click on this red starburst and
let's drop this to the bottom by
lowering selection to the bottom and
click that button and you want to hold
ctrl and click and drag and bring this
up so that the center of the starburst
is just behind just underneath the
horizon right here we don't want it
sticking
above the horizon are also hope look
right when it's all done we want to have
it just below the horizon just like that
these two little circles are going to be
the horizon that's what I'm referring to
there so once you get to that point just
click off of the graph through the
deselect everything and then we're going
to create another circle so let's click
on the create circles button and hold
ctrl and click and drag and let's create
another perfect circle about that big
let's turn that blue and come over to
the arrow click on that and hold shift
and click on our starburst and center it
up now let's click off of the graphic to
deselect everything and let's position
in this circle so that hold ctrl and
drag it down like that we want the
bottom of the circle to be we want the
horizons of the horizon here these two
little field lines to be about one third
of the way through this circle maybe
even half yeah we'll go half way just
about like that see what I'm saying here
these circles right here we want them to
be halfway through that circle about I
think that's how it looks best so once
you've done that let's right-click on
the circle and duplicate it and let's
hold shift and click on our two little
groups of circles here that are going to
be the field lines let's go to path
intersection and then let's click on
this circle right here the first circle
and hold shift and click on the
starburst and go to path intersection
and let's click on these down here let's
right-click it and go to duplicate now
let's go to path now it's set we're
going to do that two more times path out
set and one more time should do it path
out set and then hold shift and click on
the starburst in the background and
let's go to path difference and you're
gonna see what that gives us here so
let's click and drag over the entire
thing now let's bring the opacity all
the way up by they're coming to over
here to where says Oh path so you bring
it all the way up and let's turn this
find like a nice dull shade of green
maybe something like I think that looks
good and then let's deselect everything
and let's click on just the starburst up
here
the sunburst and let's go / - let's pick
like a nice shade of yellow like an
orangish yellowish shade kind of like
that I think that looks good so once
you've done that we can click and drag
over the whole thing and group it
together and as you can see that's just
one of the many techniques you can use
in Inkscape to create something like
that this is a nice abstract depiction
of I guess you can call a farm or you
know some kind of field with a sunset in
the background and we can even create
some text to go alongside with it right
farm logo the font I'm going to use for
this is since c21 let's bring those
letters a little closer together and so
one thing I don't like about that font
is that the spacing is a little a little
far apart so I always like to bring in a
little bit with this button up here
bring that in Center it up maybe make it
a little bigger and we can make that the
same shade as our little field right
there so that's some there you have it
that's pretty much it that's how you can
create a simple abstract farm sort of
logo with Inkscape so if you have any
