HOW TO USE THE HIERARCHY OF CONTROL - ISO 9001:2015 Management of Risk and Opportunities Video Lecture | ISO 9001 (Quality Management): Achieve Business Excellence

ISO 9001 2015 talks about management of
risks and opportunities now that's all
good but when we get down to the
operational control level it's sometimes
difficult to understand what we need to
control so in this video we're talking
about ISO 9001 use of management and
control to achieve what a stakeholder
wants from the output of a process.
This organisation
has identified that there's
an opportunity to do a couple of things
as a result of the identification of
risks and opportunities in their quality
management systems now the quality of
product has an output of this
organisation needs to be consistent
we're in a laser cutting facility that
laser cuts metal and there are burrs on
that material so in order to increase
the quality of the through put of this
particular factory they've picked up
this new piece of equipment now this new
piece of equipment takes away a manual
process that used to be done manually it
speeds up a process and it gives a solid
consistent outcome it's called a Time
Saver now of course lots of equipment is
time savers this particular time saver
is a huge belt sander it's got a
conveyor belt underneath and what
happens is the sheet metal that's got
the rough edges fed through this time
saver and it gets belt sanded by this
big belt sander up here so when this
stuff starts spinning it obviously spins
in this particular direction and it
sands the sheet metal so the sheet metal
parts tiny little parts that we showed
you earlier in one of the other videos
those tiny little parts can be put
through here and they can have the rough
edges knocked off it now that means that
someone doesn't have to physically
manually sand each and every one of
those parts and we can do thousands more
parts per minute or per hour then we
used to be able to do by hand so that
was identified as a risk and opportunity
in the quality management system of this
organisation and it's something I'd
think you know I'd ask you to think
about how could you make your processes
run faster particularly where there's a
bottleneck this was a very manual
process in this Factory this piece of
equipment has sped up and this is no
longer a bottleneck in the process and
the parts are
a higher quality more
consistent outcome something to consider
something to think about in your
organisation are there any bottlenecks
in your process flow are there any
opportunities to get a more consistent
outcome from a step in your process and
what could you suggest in your quality
management system and how could you use
your quality management system to
improve that process flow so you get a
stable succinct consistent output now if
I was an Assessor or a lead auditor
coming into this organisation I would be
asking a question in the quality
management system so how has the
organisation or what risks first and
foremost how has the organisation
identified their risks and opportunities
and then in the second instance how has
the organisation used the hierarchy of
control to manage their quality risks
and in this instance this example behind
me is an engineering solution to a
previously administrative process and so
as an Assessor going in and asking the
question how do you use the hierarchy of
control to manage risk how do you
identify risk how often do you identify
risks how often do you go through the
process of looking at what quality risks
and opportunities exist in the
organisation this piece of equipment is
a really good example of something that
was a manual process
so we've it-it's a good example of the
use of the hierarchy of control to
control risks where it was previously a
manual process and there was a procedure
of how to do something and this piece of
equipment has replaced the procedure
because all that happens now is people
feed the parts in one end they get
cleaned up and sent out the other end
and so instead of having a procedure and
a specification or a lot of documents
about how to do a task we purchase up a
piece of equipment so if you have a look
at the hierarchy of control that talks
about you know administration and
policies and procedures that's the
bottom this is an engineering solution
to management of risk the risk being
non-compliant parts in the process it's
a really good example of minimizing
documentation with an engineering
solution so how could you put an
engineering solution it could be a
software database equipment or change of
process
that can eliminate or at least reduce
risks in your quality process in your
organisation today we're in
manufacturing we looked at an
opportunity to reduce risks from a
safety perspective risks from a quality
perspective and install a piece of
equipment that has helped speed up the
process more consistent outcome and much
much safer for the people working in
this Factory and it's really really
exciting
