with the word magic this phenomenon also
has something to do with the M word
magnet what we've seen is no magical
feat but the simple signs of magnetism
let's try to understand the science
behind it
objects that attract magnetic materials
are called magnets two types of magnets
exist natural magnets and artificial
magnets naturally occurring magnets are
irregular in shape and are weak man-made
magnets are called artificial magnets
depending upon the applications
artificial magnets are of different
shapes and sizes
for example bar magnet circular magnet
button tight magnet and horseshoe magnet
let's now learn the properties of magnet
a magnet has two ends called the
magnetic poles magnetic poles always
exist in pairs when a bar magnet is
suspended freely from its center by a
thread one end of the magnet points
towards the north and the other end
points to the south of the Earth the end
that points to the north is called the
North Pole of the magnet and the other
end which points towards the south is
called the South Pole of the magnet we
have seen previously that magnetic
materials are attracted to a magnet the
region around the magnet where the force
of attraction can be detected is called
the magnetic field to locate such a
field we can use ion fillings
when a magnet is placed on a piece of
paper and the paper is gently tapped the
ion feelings are arranged in a
particular manner such a pattern of
arrangement shows the magnetic lines of
force these lines indicate the strength
and direction of a magnetic field
the direction of the magnetic field is
from the North Pole to the South Pole if
the magnetic field lines are very close
to each other in a particular region the
strength of the magnetic field in that
region is very large if the magnetic
field lines are far from each other in a
particular region the strength of the
magnetic field in that region is very
small the tangent at any point gives the
direction of intensity of the magnetic
field when a pair of magnets of opposite
poles is placed side by side the field
lines attract each other
similarly the field lines are the same
poles repel each other things to
remember objects that attract magnetic
materials are called magnets a freely
suspended magnet rests in the
north-south direction of the earth like
poles repel and unlike poles attract
each other the region around the magnet
where the field of attraction is felt is
called the magnetic field magnetic field
lines are closed continuous curves and
give the direction of the field strength
no two magnetic field lines can
intersect each other
