FAQs on Is matter around us pure(mixture, sol, suspension, colloid, brownian /tyndall) Ncert/class9 part-01/04 Video Lecture - Class 9

1. Is matter around us pure?
Ans. Matter around us can be classified into pure substances and mixtures. Pure substances are made up of only one type of particle and cannot be further separated into simpler components. Mixtures, on the other hand, are made up of two or more substances that are physically combined and can be separated by physical means. Hence, the matter around us can be both pure and impure, depending on whether it is a pure substance or a mixture.
2. What are the different types of mixtures?
Ans. There are two types of mixtures: homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures. Homogeneous mixtures have a uniform composition throughout, meaning that the substances are evenly distributed. Examples include saltwater and air. Heterogeneous mixtures, on the other hand, have an uneven composition, with the substances not uniformly distributed. Examples include a mixture of sand and water or a mixture of oil and water.
3. What is the difference between a sol and a suspension?
Ans. A sol is a type of colloid where solid particles are suspended in a liquid medium. The solid particles in a sol are very small and do not settle down due to gravity. On the other hand, a suspension is a heterogeneous mixture where solid particles are suspended in a liquid but eventually settle down due to gravity. The particles in a suspension are larger and can be easily seen with the naked eye.
4. What is Brownian motion?
Ans. Brownian motion is the random movement of particles suspended in a fluid (liquid or gas) due to the collision with molecules of the fluid. This motion was observed by Robert Brown in 1827 and is caused by the constant and random motion of fluid molecules. Brownian motion is significant in determining the behavior of colloids and is also used as evidence for the existence of atoms and molecules.
5. What is Tyndall effect?
Ans. The Tyndall effect is the scattering of light by colloidal particles or suspended particles in a solution. When a beam of light passes through a colloid or a suspension, the light gets scattered by the particles, making the path of the light visible. This effect is named after the scientist John Tyndall, who first explained it in the 19th century. The Tyndall effect is used to distinguish between a true solution (homogeneous) and a colloidal solution (heterogeneous).
