Each organ plays a specific role in digestion and nutrient absorption throughout the alimentary canal.

Ans. Once food enters the stomach through the oesophagus, gastric juices containing acid and enzymes break down proteins and fats. The stomach muscles churn food into a paste-like substance called chyme, which then moves gradually into the small intestine. This process takes several hours and is essential for further nutrient extraction and breakdown of complex foods.

Ans. Saliva, produced by salivary glands in the mouth, contains an enzyme called amylase that begins breaking down starches into simpler sugars. It also lubricates food, making swallowing easier. Saliva initiates chemical digestion before food even reaches the stomach, playing a critical role in the digestive process from the very start.

Ans. The small intestine is where most nutrient absorption occurs through its inner walls lined with villi. Despite its name, it's actually the longest part of the alimentary canal, measuring around 6 metres. Pancreatic enzymes and bile help further break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, allowing nutrients to enter the bloodstream efficiently.

Ans. Mechanical digestion involves physical breakdown of food through chewing and churning in the stomach, reducing particle size. Chemical digestion uses enzymes and acids to break chemical bonds in food molecules into absorbable nutrients. Both processes work together throughout the digestive tract-mechanical action in the mouth and stomach, chemical action in all digestive organs.

0:0:21: Digestion is a process in which complex food material is broken down into simpler substances.
0:0:29: The digestion of food in humans takes place in the alimentary canal, which is a long tube extending from the mouth to the anus.
0:0:42: The different parts of the alimentary canal are buccal cavity, food pipe or oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and anus.
0:0:59: Two glands namely, liver and pancreas also help in digestion.
0:1:6: The food is taken in through the mouth.
0:1:9: It is chewed and mixed with saliva in the buccal cavity.
0:1:15: Saliva is a digestive juice secreted by the salivary glands.
0:1:21: The chewed food enters into the food pipe or oesophagus and is then slowly pushed into a bag like structure called stomach.
0:1:33: The food is churned in the stomach to further break it down.
0:1:38: The stomach also secretes mucous, digestive juices and hydrochloric acid.
