Should I learn C before Assembly?
A before C is only an absolute, if you are
going in alphabetical order.
Someone told me that you should understand
the assembly languages in order to better
understand C.
There are hundreds of thousands of Objective
C programmers whose only assembly knowledge
is changing the handset cover on their iPhone.
But learning assembly languages should improve
your understanding of coding in general.
You should understand how a CPU works at a
1000 foot view level, like how it distributes
processing and talks to devices.
That’s especially true if you’ll be programming
drivers or operating system level stuff.
I don’t plan on writing operating system
level code.
Mostly apps and programs.
The funny thing about saying you should learn
Assembly before C, is that a lot of people
say you should learn C before languages like
Python to get closer to the hardware.
So C is close to the hardware.
It is certainly more logically mapped to the
hardware’s functionality and flow than object
oriented languages like JavaScript or Python.
But you don’t have to know Assembly to learn
C.
Should I learn assembly languages after C?
Learn C first.
And you’d probably want to learn other variations
of C like C++ or C#.
Is there a C flat?
Only in music.
You don’t have to know assembly to work
in C, though it does have its uses.
As you said, programming device drivers.
It also helps if you are writing gaming code
to handle the audio or video card data.
But you don’t have to know assembly.
You don’t have to know assembly languages
to work in C, and you don’t have to know
C to use assembly languages – though it
is hard to do much with a PC if all you know
is an assembly language.
It sounds like the only assembly I need to
know is in the user manual.
