FAQs on Introduction to Weather and Climate - CBSE Class 7 Science Video Lecture

1. What is the difference between weather and climate?
Ans. Weather refers to the day-to-day atmospheric conditions in terms of temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind speed, etc. Climate, on the other hand, is the long-term average weather pattern of a particular region. While weather can change rapidly, climate represents the overall trend of weather conditions over a longer period of time.
2. How is temperature measured?
Ans. Temperature is commonly measured using a thermometer. The most commonly used scale for measuring temperature is the Celsius scale, where the freezing point of water is 0 degrees Celsius and the boiling point is 100 degrees Celsius. Other scales such as Fahrenheit and Kelvin are also used in different parts of the world.
3. What are the main factors that influence weather?
Ans. The main factors that influence weather include temperature, humidity, air pressure, wind speed and direction, and the presence of clouds and precipitation. These factors are determined by the interaction of sunlight with the Earth's atmosphere and surface, as well as the rotation of the Earth.
4. How do clouds form?
Ans. Clouds form when warm air rises and cools down, causing the water vapor in the air to condense into tiny water droplets or ice crystals. This condensation occurs around tiny particles in the air called condensation nuclei. As more and more water vapor condenses, it forms visible clouds in the sky.
5. What is the greenhouse effect and how does it affect climate?
Ans. The greenhouse effect is a natural process that occurs when certain gases in the Earth's atmosphere trap heat from the sun and prevent it from escaping back into space. These gases, including carbon dioxide and methane, act like a blanket around the Earth, keeping it warm. However, human activities, such as burning fossil fuels, have increased the concentration of these greenhouse gases, leading to an enhanced greenhouse effect and global warming. This can result in changes in climate patterns, including more frequent and severe weather events.
