now we are going to talk about another
important concept called neutralization
so what do you think that the
neutralization neutralize means to
compensate something so if you include a
loss of say a hundred rupees in your
business you do something so that you
can make up for that loss you so that
you can make more money than what you
had incurred in that loss so let us go
to condensation so neutralization means
when something the effect of one object
gets neutralized by the effect of
another object so let's see what it is a
very interesting thing that we are going
to discuss here and that is what will
happen if an acid and a base reacts with
each other so what would be the response
so I'm your answer because we saw that
acids and bases they are very much
different from each other say they do
not have anything in common as such so
what will happen when they both react
with each other so what happens is
nothing but neutralization so here we
talk about balancing so whatever is
caused by the acid when you add a base
to it it tries to compensate it so that
is why it is called compensation or
neutralization so this is what happens
and neutralizing sure it is something
like let's say this is person 1 and this
person is pushing a box in this
direction so when this person is pushing
a box in this direction which direction
the box will move the box will move in
this direction now if you have another
person who starts pushing with in the
opposite direction then what will happen
do you think that the box will start
moving in this direction not really
because somebody is pushing it from this
direction also so now you actually have
people compensate in each other's effort
and that is why the box will not move at
all because one person is pushing it in
this direction the other person is
pushing it in this
direction so they are neutralizing their
efforts so this is called neutralization
so let us look at some examples of
neutralization so think of this example
now let's suppose you have the turmeric
paper dipped into a basic solution so
what happens when the turmeric paper is
dipped into a basic solution it turns
dark red now you take when you take the
same paper and dip it into acidic
solution what happens it again becomes
yellow so initially the paper was yellow
before it was dipped into the basic
solution before that also it was yellow
now once it was dipped into the basic
solution it became red not completely
but that portion and talking about again
when it was dipped into acetic solution
it again became yellow so basically if
you see first when it was put into basic
solution it became red so that was a
change which was brought by the basic
solution when you put it into acetate
solution so what happens the change is
being neutralized right so therefore it
comes back to your low so acid base they
neutralize their each other's effects so
if acid is making something yellow base
will make it red again when it is put
into acid it the legging make it yellow
again if you put it into base it will
make it red so they always neutralize
each other's effects right so let's look
at another example let's talk about the
litmus paper so initially this was a
blue litmus paper before it was put into
any solution when you put this paper
into acetic solution what happens it
turns red now when this paper is again
put into basic solution what happens it
again becomes blue so basically the
effect of the acid was compensated or
neutralized by the base so these are
some instances which clearly tell you
that acids and bases they neutralize
each other so from this we can say that
neutralization is nothing between a
reaction between an acid and a base and
in this reaction
they both neutralize each of the effects
and therefore the product which is
formed is needed an acid nor a base so
what is the product that is formed so
the products which are formed they're
basically a salt water and a lot of heat
energy is released so salt II is neither
an acid nor a base so let us look at an
example let us suppose we take an acid
so let's say we consider hydrochloric
acid so this is hydrochloric acid and
this acid is combining with a base let's
say sodium hydroxide so this one is
hydro chloric acid and this is sodium
hydroxide now as per the definition of
neutralization when this acid will
combine with this base they will
neutralize each of those effects so a
salt will be formed so which is the salt
that is formed in this is in a CL so
basically this na combines with this CL
so any CL and you are left with h2o so H
2o and some amount of heat energy so
what does this l is here
NaCl is nothing but the common salt so
it is a salt so soil plus water plus
heat energy so this type of reactions
are known as neutralization reactions so
let us take some more examples of
neutralization reaction because you
should not think that okay this reaction
works only with hydrochloric acid or
only with sodium hydroxide
I take examples of a lot of different
acids and also a lot of different bases
and we'll show you how salts are being
produced along with water so let us take
first example where we can
either sulfuric acid that is h2so4
so when sulfuric acid combines with
sodium hydroxide what happens so this is
self uric acid now these reactions which
I am writing here now you can perform
his experiments also to see how exactly
the salt is being formed however it is
not advice to handle the acids alone so
if you want you can perform these
experiments in the laboratory of your
school when you are being assisted by
your laboratory trainer or your teachers
only then please handle acids so if you
combine sulfuric acid with sodium
hydroxide so what happens you get sodium
sulfate that is na2so4 along with water
so this sodium sulfate is again a salt
let's take another example where we
consider hydrochloric acid but we are
considering a different base here that
is potassium hydroxide so here we are
considering potassium hydroxide so in
this case what happens as a result of
this reaction it forms potassium
chloride plus water so this is potassium
chloride which is again a salt
so this potassium chloride is again a
salt let's take another example when we
take in other new acids that is nitric
acid which is hno3 so this is nitric
acid so when nitric acid combines with a
base like potassium hydroxide it forms
potassium nitrate that is K no.3 and you
are left with H 2 O so this kno3
potassium nitrate is again a salt so you
see in each of these cases even though
we try it out with different acids like
sulfuric acid hydrochloric acid nitric
acid already try it out with different
pieces but the result is always a salt
along with water and some
need energy so these type of reactions
are known as neutralization reactions
