On December 17, 2023, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar inaugurated the International Gita Seminar and Geeta Mahotsav at Brahma Sarovar in Kurukshetra, Haryana.
The theme of this year is – “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam: Srimad Bhagavad Gita and Universal Unity.” The International Geeta Mahotsav programs are scheduled from December 7 to December 24, with the main event taking place from December 17 to December 24. Assam plays a pivotal role as the main state partner for this program. The event is organized collaboratively by the Kurukshetra Development Board, Haryana Tourism, District Administration, North Zone Cultural Centre, Patiala, and the Information and Public Relations Department of Haryana.

The Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Reliance Retail's JioMart to help expand the reach of Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY) products to self-help groups (SHGs). Recently, 1467 projects of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have been brought under the Bhoomi Rashi Portal. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) announced that India's Hardik Singh and Savita won the 2023 FIH Player of the Year and FIH Goalkeeper of the Year awards. This is Savita's third consecutive FIH Women's Goalkeeper of the Year award after winning in 2021 and 2022. Dutch goalkeeper Pirmin Black also won the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year award. The FIH Rising Stars award was won by Teresa Lima (ESP) and Gaspard Xavier (FRA). 

Researchers from Visva-Bharati University discovered a new plant growth-promoting bacteria species which they named Pantoea Tagorei, in homage to Rabindranath Tagore’s agricultural promotion efforts. The bacteria has unique properties that enhance soil nutrients.

Union Youth Programme, Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur launched the official logo, jersey, mascot and theme song of Khelo India Youth Games in Chennai. The sixth edition of Khelo India Youth Games is scheduled from 19 to 31 January in the coming year. The upcoming edition will be held in four cities of Tamil Nadu – Chennai, Trichy, Madurai and Coimbatore. The last five editions of the Youth Games were held in Delhi, Pune, Guwahati, Panchkula and Bhopal.

12% of worldwide trade passes through the Suez Canal, which handles ship passages between Asia and Europe. The canal has faced disruptions after recent attacks by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group on ships in the Red Sea. This has choked trade and prompted the establishment of a naval task force for safe passage. The hostilities impact the movement of global goods, causing supply chain backups and shortages. The attacks are part of the ongoing conflict between the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen. The location of the Suez Canal makes the disruptions strategically important.

Union Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda inaugurated a two-day tribal-centric program – Aadi Lecture – in New Delhi. The program has been organized by the National Tribal Research Institute (NTRI). The objective of which is to provide a deeper understanding of the complexities of tribal traditions and culture and to explore the challenges of their survival.

It is former Army Chief General M M Naravane’s forthcoming memoir “Four Stars of Destiny” that mentions the armed forces were taken by surprise when the Agnipath military recruitment scheme was introduced. Gen Naravane writes he had proposed a Tour of Duty model for limited jawan intake but what came up as Agnipath applied to all new recruits in Army, Navy and Air Force, that too for only 4 years.

The Indian Navy has deployed indigenous guided missile destroyers in the Gulf of Aden region in view of the recent piracy incident. The move is aimed at preventing piracy attempts in the Gulf of Aden region. The Gulf of Aden is located in the Arabian Sea, between Yemen and Somalia (Horn of Africa). It forms a natural maritime link between the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.
