Disasters due to landslides, are in general, far less dramatic than due to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and cyclones but their impact on the natural environment and national economy is in no way less severe.

Landslide is the mass movement of rock, debris or earth down a slope. It includes a broad range of motions whereby falling, sliding and flowing under the influence of gravity dislodges the earth material.

The scheme was implemented in India to check the floods as Domadar river was considered as "River of Sorrow" due to frequent floods.

The cause for floods in India is due to deforestation,colonisation of flood plains and chocking of drainage channels.

• Natural disasters vs hazards: Natural disasters are relatively sudden events that cause large-scale damage and destruction, in contrast to hazards which are potential threats or risks. Hazards may lead to disasters when they actually occur.


• Speed of impact: Natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and tsunamis can strike with little to no warning, causing immediate and widespread devastation. This makes them relatively fast-moving events compared to hazards.


• Scale of disaster: Natural disasters often affect large areas and populations, leading to significant loss of life, property damage, and economic impacts. They can have far-reaching consequences that extend beyond the initial event.


• Severity of damage: Natural disasters typically result in extensive damage, displacement of people, and disruption of essential services. The aftermath of a natural disaster can have long-lasting effects on communities and their ability to recover.

Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions that cause the sea-floor to move abruptly resulting in sudden displacement of ocean water in the form of high vertical waves are called tsunamis (harbour waves) or seismic sea waves. A tsunami is generated when an earthquake comes or a volcano erupts.
