WBPSC (State PCS) WBCS (West Bengal) Exam Syllabus:The West Bengal Civil Service (WBCS) examination conducted by the West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC) is divided into three stages - Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and Personality Test. The WBCS exam aims to recruit candidates for various Group A, B, C, and D services in the West Bengal government.
Preliminary Examination:The Preliminary Examination consists of a single paper on General Studies. The syllabus for the Preliminary Examination includes the following topics:
1. English Composition (25 marks):
- Synonyms
- Antonyms
- Idioms and Phrases
- Vocabulary Test
- Phrasal Verbs
- Same words bearing more than one meaning
- Use of appropriate and qualifying words, etc.
2. General Science (25 marks):
- General appreciation and understanding of science
- Matters of everyday observation
- Experience as expected of any educated person
- The standard of knowledge expected from a well-educated person, etc.
3. Current Events of National and International Importance (25 marks):
- Significant events related to political, cultural, scientific, sports, and socio-economic fields
- Current important events of national and international level, etc.
4. History of India (25 marks):
- Social, economic, and political aspects of Indian history
- Growth of nationalism and freedom movement
- Modern history (from the middle of the 18th century until the present) with special emphasis on Indian culture and Indian National Movement, etc.
5. Indian National Movement (25 marks):
- Nature and character of the 19th-century resurgence
- Growth of nationalism
- Attainment of Independence, etc.
6. Geography of India (25 marks):
- Physical, social, and economic geography of the country
- Main features of Indian agriculture and natural resources
- Location, extent, and physical features of India, etc.
7. Indian Polity and Economy (25 marks):
- Political system
- Panchayati Raj
- Community development and planning in India
- Economic development in India, etc.
8. Indian National Movement (25 marks):
- Nature and character of the 19th-century resurgence
- Growth of nationalism
- Attainment of Independence, etc.
9. Indian National Movement (25 marks):
- Nature and character of the 19th-century resurgence
- Growth of nationalism
- Attainment of Independence, etc.
10. Indian National Movement (25 marks):
- Nature and character of the 19th-century resurgence
- Growth of nationalism
- Attainment of Independence, etc.
Main Examination:The Main Examination consists of six compulsory papers and one optional subject (two papers). The compulsory papers are:
1. Bengali/Hindi/Urdu/Nepali/Santali (200 marks)
2. English (200 marks)
3. General Studies-I (Indian History) (200 marks)
4. General Studies-II (Science & Scientific and Technological advancement, Environment, General Knowledge, and Current Affairs) (200 marks)
5. The Constitution of India and Indian Economy including the role and functions of the Reserve Bank of India (200 marks)
6. Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning (200 marks)
Optional Subject:Candidates need to choose one optional subject from the list provided by the WBPSC. The optional subject consists of two papers, each carrying 200 marks.
