Year 3 English for Year 3In Year 3, students will continue to develop their English language skills through a variety of topics and activities. The curriculum will cover the following areas:
Year 3 Spelling- Students will learn and practice spelling words with common letter patterns, such as consonant blends, digraphs, and long vowel sounds.
- They will also learn strategies for spelling irregular words and commonly misspelled words.
Year 3 Prefixes & Suffixes- Students will explore prefixes and suffixes and understand how they can change the meaning of a word.
- They will learn to identify and use common prefixes and suffixes in their writing.
Year 3 Punctuation- Students will learn about different types of punctuation marks, including periods, question marks, exclamation marks, commas, and quotation marks.
- They will practice using punctuation correctly in sentences and learn how it can affect the meaning of a sentence.
Year 3 Grammar- Students will continue to build on their understanding of grammar, including parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs), subject-verb agreement, and sentence structure.
- They will learn to identify and use different types of sentences, such as declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences.
Year 3 Sentences- Students will learn about different sentence types, including simple, compound, and complex sentences.
- They will practice writing sentences with different structures and learn how to combine sentences to make their writing more interesting.
Year 3 Dictionary- Students will learn how to use a dictionary to find the meanings of words, as well as how to use other reference materials, such as glossaries and thesauruses.
- They will practice looking up words and using the information they find to enhance their comprehension and vocabulary skills.
Year 3 Comprehension- Students will continue to develop their reading comprehension skills through a variety of texts, including fiction and non-fiction.
- They will learn strategies for understanding and interpreting texts, such as making predictions, summarizing, making connections, and asking questions.
Year 3 Creative Writing- Students will explore different forms of creative writing, such as narratives, descriptive writing, and poetry.
- They will practice using descriptive language, creating characters, and developing engaging plots.
Year 3 Poetic Devices- Students will learn about different poetic devices, such as similes, metaphors, personification, and onomatopoeia.
- They will practice using these devices in their own poetry writing.
Year 3 Non-fiction- Students will explore non-fiction texts, such as informational articles, biographies, and reports.
- They will learn how to identify and understand the main ideas, supporting details, and text features in non-fiction texts.
Year 3 Fiction- Students will read and analyze a variety of fiction texts, including stories, fables, and folktales.
- They will learn to identify and discuss elements of fiction, such as plot, setting, characters, and themes.
Year 3 Poems- Students will read and analyze different types of poems, including rhyming poems, free verse, and haikus.
- They will learn to identify and discuss poetic elements, such as rhythm, rhyme, and imagery.
Year 3 Plays- Students will explore the genre of plays and learn about elements such as scripts, dialogue, and stage directions.
- They will have opportunities to read, perform, and analyze plays.
Year 3 Sound Words- Students will learn about sound words, also known as onomatopoeia, and how they can be used to enhance writing and create vivid imagery.
- They will practice using sound words in their own writing.
Year 3 Debate- Students will learn the basics of debate, including how to present arguments, use evidence, and engage in respectful discussion.
- They will have opportunities to participate in class debates and develop their critical thinking and persuasive skills.
Throughout Year 3 English, students will engage in a range of activities, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening. They will also have opportunities for collaborative work and independent projects to further enhance their language skills.
