Terminology
Solute:- It is the material that is transferred from
the gas to the liquid phase
Liquid desiccants:- Liquid solutions that have the
property of absorbing moisture from air, e.g.,
lithium chloride and triethylene glycol
 Scrubbing:- Another term for absorption
Salting out:- Liquid desiccants contain significant
amount of water in which the pollutants are
dissolved, and presence of certain chemicals like
lithium chloride can decrease the solubility of
pollutants in water, this phenomenon is known as
salting out.

FAQs on PPT - Absorption - Mass Transfer - Chemical Engineering

1. What is absorption in chemical engineering?
Ans. Absorption in chemical engineering refers to the process of transferring one or more components from a gas phase into a liquid phase. It involves the contact between the gas and liquid phases, allowing the solute to dissolve in the liquid phase. This process is commonly used in various industrial applications, such as gas purification, separation, and environmental control.
2. What are the factors that affect the efficiency of absorption processes?
Ans. Several factors can influence the efficiency of absorption processes in chemical engineering. These factors include the concentration of the solute in the gas phase, the temperature and pressure conditions, the contact time between the gas and liquid phases, the properties of the solvent, such as its solubility and viscosity, and the design and operation of the absorption equipment.
3. What are the different types of absorption systems?
Ans. In chemical engineering, there are various types of absorption systems used for different applications. Some common types include packed bed absorbers, spray towers, bubble columns, and plate columns. Packed bed absorbers consist of a column filled with solid packing materials, while spray towers use nozzles to disperse the liquid solvent into droplets. Bubble columns rely on the rising gas bubbles for contact with the liquid phase, and plate columns have vertically stacked plates to increase contact efficiency.
4. How is absorption different from adsorption?
Ans. Absorption and adsorption are two distinct processes in chemical engineering. Absorption involves the transfer of solute components from a gas phase into a liquid phase, while adsorption refers to the adherence of solute molecules onto the surface of a solid material. In absorption, the solute is dissolved in the liquid solvent, whereas in adsorption, the solute is physically attached to the solid surface. The mechanisms and applications of absorption and adsorption differ significantly.
5. What are some applications of absorption in chemical engineering?
Ans. Absorption plays a crucial role in various applications within chemical engineering. It is commonly used for gas separation, such as removing impurities from natural gas or separating carbon dioxide from flue gases in power plants. Absorption is also utilized in wastewater treatment to remove contaminants, in the production of pharmaceuticals to purify raw materials, and in the manufacturing of chemicals to recover valuable solvents.
