Subhash had learnt about fractions in
Classes IV and V , so whenever possible
he would try to use fractions. One
occasion was when he forgot his lunch
at home. His friend Farida invited him
to share her lunch. She had five pooris
in her lunch box. So, Subhash and
Farida took two pooris each. Then
Farida made two equal halves of the
fifth poori and gave one-half to Subhash
and took the other half herself. Thus,
both Subhash and Farida had 2 full
pooris and one-half poori.
Where do you come across situations with fractions in
your life?
Subhash knew that one-half is written as

. While
eating he further divided his half poori into two equal
parts and asked Farida what fraction of the whole poori
was that piece? (Fig 7.1)
Without answering, Farida also divided her portion of the
half puri into two equal parts and kept them beside Subhash’s
shares. She said that these four equal parts together make

FAQs on NCERT Textbook: Fractions - Mathematics (Maths) Class 6

1. What is a fraction?
Ans. A fraction is a numerical representation that expresses a part of a whole or a ratio between two quantities. It consists of a numerator (the number above the line) and a denominator (the number below the line), separated by a horizontal line.
2. How do you compare fractions?
Ans. To compare fractions, you need to find a common denominator for the fractions being compared. Then, compare the numerators. The fraction with the greater numerator is larger, while the one with the smaller numerator is smaller. If the numerators are equal, compare the denominators. The fraction with the smaller denominator is larger.
3. How do you add fractions with different denominators?
Ans. To add fractions with different denominators, you need to find a common denominator. This can be done by finding the least common multiple (LCM) of the denominators. Once you have a common denominator, you can add the numerators of the fractions and place the sum over the common denominator.
4. How do you subtract fractions?
Ans. To subtract fractions, you need to have a common denominator. Once you have a common denominator, subtract the numerators of the fractions and place the difference over the common denominator.
5. How do you simplify fractions?
Ans. To simplify a fraction, you need to find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator. Divide both the numerator and denominator by their GCD to obtain the simplified fraction. Simplifying a fraction means expressing it in its lowest terms.
