If you are thinking of a century, educate the people.
When we set about the task of higher education, we should be absolutely clear
in our perception of the goals of education in the specific context of our nation’s

create the required range and nature of trained manpower assessed to be
needed by different sector of national growth. The entire educational apparatus
must be geared progressively to fulfill the requirement of different phases of our
growth in every sector - primary. Secondary and tertiary. The aim must be to
ensure that our country does not experience, Either paucity or a surfeit to trained
in a power in any specific segment of our economy. The requirement of our
country as a free, democratic, secular, socialist nation aspiring for rapid

regulate themselves to give the country the precise nature and quantum of
trained manpower as projected by the requirements of our planned economy.

GATEWAY TO THE PAST
Located off the Saket-Sheikh Sarai road almost totally hidden, because it is built
in a sligh depression, there stands one of the most unique examples of the architecture
of the Sultanate period. The Khirkec Mosque is one of the seven mosques in Delhi that
were built by Jomann Shah, also known as Khan-e-Jahan, the Wazir of Firoze Tughlaq.
Shah also built the Kalan Masjid-which is now inside the Walled City- the Begumpur
Masjid and the Kalu Sarai Masjid.
The Khirkee Mosque is unique in its square design. Two long arched corridors
divide the Mosque into four blocks. Previously, each section had a central dome. And
the entire Mosque was roofed over, with just four large square openings to let all that
light stream in.
The top of Mosque presents a most fascinating sight, three large domes-there
were four in the original design-and a large number of smaller domes clustered together
creating strange designs of light and shade.
Local peasants had taken over the mosque much before 1857. On my first visit to
this unique structure, which deserves to be on world heritage list, I saw the blue ASI
board outside and inside; there were a few smack addicts, sundry vagabonds, donkeys
and some unfriendly dogs.
Things have improved a bit since then. You will now meet three card playing ASI
employees from sunrise to sundown every day except Monday.
2.1 Now answer these questions -
(a) Describe the unique design of Khirkee mosque in your own words.
(b) What is the reason for the author's distress about the maintenance of the
mosque ?
(c) What period of history is represented by the Khirkee mosque?
