1. What is the RTI Act?
Ans. The Right to Information (RTI) Act is a law in India that gives citizens the right to access information held by public authorities. It promotes transparency, accountability, and good governance by allowing individuals to request and receive information from government and public institutions.
2. Who does the RTI Act apply to?
Ans. The RTI Act applies to all public authorities, including government departments, ministries, agencies, and public sector undertakings. It also extends to bodies controlled or substantially financed by the government, as well as private organizations that receive government funding.
3. How can I file an RTI application?
Ans. To file an RTI application, you need to address a written request to the Public Information Officer (PIO) of the relevant public authority. The application should clearly state the information you are seeking and be accompanied by the prescribed fee, which can vary depending on the state or central government.
4. What kind of information can I request under the RTI Act?
Ans. You can request any information that is held by a public authority and falls within the ambit of the RTI Act. This includes records, documents, memos, emails, opinions, advice, reports, and any other material in tangible or electronic form. However, certain exemptions exist, such as information that may harm national security or personal privacy.
5. What should I do if my RTI application is rejected?
Ans. If your RTI application is rejected, you have the right to file an appeal with a higher authority, known as the First Appellate Authority (FAA). The FAA will review your case and decide whether the rejection was justified. If you are still dissatisfied with the decision, you can approach the Information Commission, which has the power to order the release of information.
