1. What is the structure of DNA?
Ans. DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is a double-stranded molecule that resembles a twisted ladder or helix. It consists of two long chains of nucleotides, which are made up of a sugar-phosphate backbone and nitrogenous bases. The bases include adenine (A), thymine (T), cytosine (C), and guanine (G), which pair together in a complementary manner (A with T and C with G) to form the rungs of the ladder.
2. How does DNA replicate?
Ans. DNA replication is a process in which the DNA molecule produces an identical copy of itself. It occurs during the S phase of the cell cycle. The replication process involves the separation of the two DNA strands, each serving as a template for the synthesis of a new complementary strand. Enzymes called DNA helicases unwind the DNA double helix, while DNA polymerases add nucleotides to the growing new strands, following the base-pairing rules.
3. What is the role of RNA in protein synthesis?
Ans. RNA, or ribonucleic acid, plays a crucial role in protein synthesis. There are three main types of RNA involved: messenger RNA (mRNA), transfer RNA (tRNA), and ribosomal RNA (rRNA). mRNA carries the genetic information from DNA to the ribosomes, where proteins are synthesized. tRNA helps in translating the genetic code by bringing the amino acids to the ribosome, while rRNA forms the structural and catalytic components of the ribosomes.
4. How does natural selection drive evolution?
Ans. Natural selection is a process that drives evolution by favoring individuals with certain advantageous traits, increasing their chances of survival and reproduction. This process occurs due to the variation in traits within a population. Individuals with traits that provide them with a better chance of survival and reproduction are more likely to pass on their genes to the next generation, leading to a gradual change in the population's characteristics over time.
5. What are the main differences between mitosis and meiosis?
Ans. Mitosis and meiosis are both processes of cell division, but they differ in their purpose and outcomes. Mitosis is a type of cell division that produces two genetically identical daughter cells, each with the same number of chromosomes as the parent cell. It is involved in growth, repair, and asexual reproduction. On the other hand, meiosis is a specialized type of cell division that produces gametes (sperm and egg cells) with half the number of chromosomes as the parent cell. It is essential for sexual reproduction and contributes to genetic diversity.
