6. How many diagonals does each of the following have?
(i) A convex quadrilateral
(ii) A regular hexagon
(iii) A triangle
Solution:
(i) A convex quadrilateral

For a convex quadrilateral we shall use the formula n(n-3)/2
So, number of diagonals = 4(4-3)/2 = 4/2 = 2
A convex quadrilateral has 2 diagonals.

(ii) A regular hexagon

For a regular hexagon we shall use the formula n(n-3)/2
So, number of diagonals = 6(6-3)/2 = 18/2 = 9
A regular hexagon has 9 diagonals.

FAQs on RD Sharma Solutions (Ex 3.1): Understanding Quadrilaterals - Mathematics (Maths) Class 8

1. What are the different types of quadrilaterals?
Ans. There are several types of quadrilaterals, including squares, rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and rhombuses. Each type has its own unique properties and characteristics.
2. How do you identify the different types of quadrilaterals?
Ans. To identify the different types of quadrilaterals, you can look at their properties. For example, a square has four equal sides and four right angles, while a rectangle has four right angles but not necessarily equal sides. By examining the lengths of the sides and the angles of a quadrilateral, you can determine its type.
3. What is the sum of the angles in a quadrilateral?
Ans. The sum of the angles in any quadrilateral is always 360 degrees. This means that if you add up all the angles in a quadrilateral, the total will always be 360 degrees, regardless of the type of quadrilateral.
4. How can you prove that a quadrilateral is a parallelogram?
Ans. There are several ways to prove that a quadrilateral is a parallelogram. One way is to show that both pairs of opposite sides are parallel. Another way is to demonstrate that both pairs of opposite sides are equal in length. Additionally, you can prove that both pairs of opposite angles are congruent. If any of these conditions are met, then the quadrilateral is a parallelogram.
5. What is the difference between a trapezoid and a parallelogram?
Ans. The main difference between a trapezoid and a parallelogram is that a trapezoid has only one pair of parallel sides, while a parallelogram has two pairs of parallel sides. In a trapezoid, the non-parallel sides are called legs, and the parallel sides are called bases. In a parallelogram, all sides are parallel.
