Close to 52% farm field is still unirrigated and dependant on rainfall. 
(or 73.2 million hectares area out of 141.4 million hectares net sown area)
Backed by good monsoon rainfall last year, India had produced record 284.83 million tonnes of 
foodgrains in 2017-18 crop year (July-June) which was 9.72 million tonnes (MT) higher than the 
country’s previous record during 2016-17.

Share of agriculture in employment was 48.9 per cent of the workforce [NSSO, 2011-12] 
T welfth Five Year Plan (2012-13 to 2016-17) had envisaged a growth target of 4% for agriculture & allied 
sectors, necessary for the Indian economy to grow at over 8%.
