Oxidation number (continued)
(a) Oxidation number for an element is defined as the
arbitrary charge present on one atom when all other atoms
bonded to it are removed as ions.
(b) When a bond between two identical atoms is broken, the
bonded electrons are distributed equally between these
atoms.
(c) Similarly when a bond between two different atoms is
broken, the bonded electrons are assumed to be retained by
the more electronegative atom.

Oxidation number (continued)
(a) Oxidation number for an element is defined as the
arbitrary charge present on one atom when all other atoms
bonded to it are removed as ions.
(b) When a bond between two identical atoms is broken, the
bonded electrons are distributed equally between these

the more electronegative atom.
Oxidation number (continued)
(d) Rules for the determination of oxidation number
Oxidation number (abbreviated as O.N.) is determined as per
the below mentioned rules : -
(i) In all hydrogen compound (except hydrides of very active
metals such as lithium, sodium or calcium), O.N. of hydrogen
is taken to be +1.
(ii) In all oxygen compounds (except hydrogen peroxide,
super oxide and related compounds) the O.N. is taken to be –
2. The O.N. of oxygen in OF
2
is +2,
(iii) In compounds, the O.N. of fluorine is assigned to be –1.
Since fluorine is the highest electronegative element, so its
O.N. is always –1.
(iv) In compounds, the group I elements (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs
and Fr) have an O.N. of +1.
