FAQs on Chemistry - 2020 Past Year Paper - IIT JAM Chemistry Past Year Papers

1. What is the chemical composition of water?
Ans. Water is composed of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, giving it the chemical formula H2O. This means that each water molecule consists of two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom.
2. What are the physical properties of water?
Ans. Water has several unique physical properties, including being a liquid at room temperature, having a high boiling point and melting point, and being a good solvent. It also exhibits surface tension, cohesion, and adhesion, which are important for various biological and chemical processes.
3. How does water participate in chemical reactions?
Ans. Water can participate in chemical reactions through processes such as ionization, hydrolysis, and dehydration synthesis. In ionization, water molecules can dissociate into hydrogen ions (H+) and hydroxide ions (OH-). Hydrolysis involves the breaking of chemical bonds with the addition of water molecules, while dehydration synthesis involves the formation of chemical bonds with the removal of water molecules.
4. How does water contribute to the pH scale?
Ans. Water plays a crucial role in the pH scale as it is neutral and has a pH of 7. The pH scale measures the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution, with values below 7 being acidic, values above 7 being basic, and 7 being neutral. Water can act as both an acid and a base, as it can donate a hydrogen ion (H+) or accept a hydroxide ion (OH-), which helps maintain the balance of acidity and alkalinity in various chemical reactions.
5. What is the significance of water in living organisms?
Ans. Water is essential for life and is involved in numerous biological processes. It serves as a solvent for important molecules such as proteins and carbohydrates, enabling chemical reactions to occur within cells. Water also helps regulate body temperature, acts as a lubricant and cushioning agent, and facilitates the transportation of nutrients and waste products in organisms.
