How Many Times
Summary
 5 5 5 5 5 5 = 30 beads.
 6 groups of 5 beads each = 6 × 5 = 30 beads
When each group has the same number, we used multiplication to find how
many are there in all.
or we can say that multiplication is repeated addition.
Properties
• Any number multiplied by 1 is that number itself i.e.
 1 × 22 = 22, 135 × 1 = 135
• Any number multiplied by 0 is always zero i.e.
 0 × 53 = 0, 227 × 0 = 0
• The numbers that are multiplied are called factors i.e. 12 × 5 = 60 Here
12 and 5 are factors and the answer so obtained is called product i.e.
here 60 is product.

ACTIVITY
I. Shortcut to multiply by 11:
Example:
 23 × 11 = 253
Step 1: Write digit at unit’s place as it is
Step 2: Add the digits at unit and tens place and
write it at ten’s place
Step 3: Write digit at tens place as it is at
hundred’s place
Now Solve:
(i) 13 × 11 (ii) 25 × 11 (iii) 36 × 11 (iv) 27 × 11 (vi) 42 × 11
II. Activity
• Take 3 consecutive numbers of 4, 5 and 6
• Multiply the middle number by itself i.e. 5 × 5 = 25
• Multiply the other two numbers i.e. 4 × 6 = 24
• Subtract the two products i.e. 25 – 24 = 1
Find out whether it works for other consecutive numbers too.

2 2+3 3
2 5 3
