Magnifying Glass
A Journey Through Hidden Wonders
Stanza 1
The speaker introduces a "round glass," meaning a magnifying glass, describing it
as something magical.
When he looks through it, ordinary things suddenly appear full of secrets and
beauty.
In a tiny scrap of chalk, he can see countless (a myriad) of tiny shells, reminding
us that chalk is made from ancient sea creatures
A small inch of moss looks like a whole forest, with miniature flowers, plants, and
trees
A single drop of water appears like a hive of bees4full of motion and life, as if it
holds an entire community inside
The magnifying glass transforms simple, unnoticed things into marvellous
discoveries.
This stanza highlights the hidden richness of nature, visible only when we observe
closely.
Stanza 2:
The poet then lies in wait, using the glass to carefully
watch a spider.
He observes how the spider skillfully spins its web,
shooting out silk threads from its spinnerets (organs
that produce silk).
The word "deft" shows the spider's speed, skill, and
precision in weaving
The poet notices its sharp claws, comparing them to a
tiger's, showing that even a small spider has great
strength and danger
Despite being tiny, the spider seems like a hunter,
patient and powerful
The poet also notices how silly flies, even though they
have many eyes, still stumble blindly into the web.
This shows nature's irony4creatures with many eyes
still fall into traps, while the small spider uses its skills
to survive.
The stanza reveals both admiration for the spider's
talent and awareness of the harsh side of nature.
Stanza 3
The poet concludes by saying that there is nothing too small for the glass to make
marvellous.
Even the tiniest object becomes more than itself4it "surpasses" expectations,
showing hidden beauty.
The magnifying glass helps us see things in a way that surprises us, opening new
worlds.
The poet extends this idea to larger lenses, such as telescopes, which let us see
distant places like the moon.
With such powerful tools, it might even feel as if one could walk on the moon in
just an afternoon.
This thought blends science with imagination, showing how curiosity can turn
dreams into possibilities.
The stanza ends with a sense of wonder, encouraging readers to believe that both
the smallest and the farthest things in the universe hold endless marvels.
