Properties of
Materials
Materials are everywhere, from wood to metal. Each has unique
properties making it useful for different purposes.
Appearance of the Material
Lustrous Materials
These materials have shiny
surfaces that reflect light. Most
metals like copper, aluminum,
and gold are lustrous; they
sparkle!
Non-lustrous Materials
These materials do not shine.
Wood, paper, and chalk are
examples. They have dull
surfaces that absorb light.
Remember: Some materials look shiny due to polish, but aren't
always metals.
Which Materials Are Hard?
Hard Materials
These are difficult to compress,
scratch, or bend. Examples:
Stone, rocks
Iron, steel
Glass
Diamond
Soft Materials
These are easily compressed,
scratched, or bent. Examples:
Sponge, foam
Rubber erasers
Clay
Candle wax
Transparency: Can We See Them?
Transparent
Light passes
through clearly.
Examples: clear
glass, water.
Translucent
You can see
through, but
objects appear
blurry. Examples:
frosted glass, thin
cloth.
Opaque
Light is blocked
completely; you
cannot see
through. Examples:
wood, cardboard.
What is soluble?
Soluble Heroes!
Sugar and salt dissolve in
water - they're soluble! They
disappear but you can still
taste them!
Insoluble Challengers!
Sand and pebbles don't
dissolve - they're insoluble!
They stay visible no matter
how much you stir.
Weight and Volume: Heavy or Light?
Comparing Weights
Materials vary in weight even if
they're the same size. Sand is
heavier than cotton balls
because particles are more
dense.
Understanding Volume
Volume is the space something
occupies. Two bottles can be
the same size but hold different
liquid amounts (e.g., 500 mL vs
1 L).
Great job! You now understand Appearance, Hardness,
Transparency, Solubility, Weight, and Volume. Keep exploring
materials!
