3.2 Types of Ephemeris

? Ephemerides are a plural of ephemeris or values with which position and velocity of a satellite at any
time can be determined. There are two types of ephemerides:

? Broadcast ephemeris
? Precise ephemeris

? Broadcast Ephemeris: It is a predicted satellite position which is broadcasted in the navigational
message from the satellite in real time. Monitor Stations (of Control segment) receives the satellite
tracking data which is used by MCS (Master Control Station) to compute the new orbital parameters
of the satellite and is transmitted back to the satellite by MCS. The daily update is done and it is
transmitted with the navigational message. These ephemerides are received by the receiver capable of
capturing either C/A code or P code.

? Precise Ephemeris: The more accurate satellite positions are obtained by the actual tracking data and
post-processing is done later on. These are more accurate than the predicted data, as it is based on
actual tracking of satellite orbits in real-time. The US Department of Defense doesn’t want the precise
ephemerides to be available for online GPS applications like missile guidance system, other warfare
operations, therefore does not provide these in real-time. These are available with a delay of about 12-
hrs for ultra rapid to 12- days for most precise services, for civil users.

FAQs on Lecture 3.2 - Types of Ephemeris - Civil Engineering (CE)

1. What is an ephemeris in civil engineering?
Ans. An ephemeris in civil engineering is a set of data that provides the positions of celestial bodies or satellites at specific times. It is used to calculate the coordinates and movements of these bodies, which are crucial for various applications in civil engineering such as surveying and navigation.
2. How are ephemeris data used in civil engineering?
Ans. Ephemeris data is used in civil engineering for various purposes. It is particularly important in surveying, where it helps in accurately determining the position of points on the Earth's surface. Additionally, ephemeris data is used in satellite-based navigation systems like GPS to calculate precise locations and provide accurate positioning information for construction and transportation projects.
3. What are the different types of ephemeris used in civil engineering?
Ans. There are primarily two types of ephemeris used in civil engineering: astronomical ephemeris and satellite ephemeris. Astronomical ephemeris provides data on the positions of celestial bodies like the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars. Satellite ephemeris, on the other hand, provides information about the positions of artificial satellites, which is crucial for satellite-based navigation systems.
4. How is ephemeris data obtained for civil engineering applications?
Ans. Ephemeris data is obtained through precise observations and calculations. For astronomical ephemeris, observations of celestial bodies are made using telescopes and other instruments, and these observations are then used to calculate their positions at specific times. Satellite ephemeris, on the other hand, is obtained through tracking and monitoring the signals transmitted by satellites, which allows for the calculation of their positions in real-time.
5. What are the benefits of using ephemeris data in civil engineering?
Ans. The use of ephemeris data in civil engineering offers several benefits. It enables accurate positioning and surveying, which is crucial for construction projects, land development, and infrastructure planning. Ephemeris data also plays a vital role in satellite-based navigation systems, ensuring precise location information for transportation and logistics. Overall, ephemeris data improves the accuracy and efficiency of various civil engineering applications, leading to better project outcomes.
