1. What are alcohols?

Ans. Phenols are organic compounds that contain a hydroxyl group (-OH) attached to an aromatic ring, while alcohols contain a hydroxyl group attached to a carbon atom in an aliphatic chain. Phenols are more acidic than alcohols due to the resonance stabilization of the phenoxide ion formed upon deprotonation.
3. How are ethers formed?
Ans. Ethers are formed by the reaction of an alcohol with an alkyl halide or an alkoxide ion with an alkyl halide. This reaction is called Williamson ether synthesis. Ethers can also be formed by the dehydration of alcohols in the presence of an acid catalyst.

5. What are the physical properties of alcohols?

Primary and secondary alcohols can undergo oxidation to form aldehydes and ketones, respectively, while tertiary alcohols are resistant to oxidation.
