The condition of Indian farmer is in dire straits to say the least.Since the time we opened up in the name of reforms in 1991 till date the world bank and other such foreign entities are dictating policies to the government(left, right and center) because we have taken loans from them.
Do you know what happens next? India is set to urbanize rapidly from now on to almost 70-80% where are the people going to come given that close to 70% of the population lives in villages now.
It simply means a systematic destruction of agriculture and the related livelihoods of rural people to make them so desperate for making a living that they have to migrate to cities.
Now the numbers don't lie the number of farmer suicides since 1991 and the amount of budget it has been given shows us the trend and the prevailing attitude towards agriculture from the government. At first they will be trapped into debt forced to sell everything they have and migrate to cities empty handed looking for work and what happens if one is living in the metro cities constant expansion of roads flyovers and construction of buildings over crowded public transport and crime so we shouldn't be wanting our farmers to come to the cities we need them to produce food for us.
The other day a famous economist from iim Bangalore pointed out that since reforms Lower level people's income has risen two times but the costs have risen four times, if you compare everything it is moving exactly the way the world banks wants it to be.
And not only that when out rural sector is decimated there is a provision that we are going to import food from US which has the largest arable land in the world of course it will be genetically modified.krishna river delta the granary of andhra pradesh is being destroyed in the name of development and building a capital city one wonders whether we need a capital right on the delta.
So this is the past present and future of agriculture in India all are verifiable facts that I have mentioned here.
