M.Hamel's Response to Little Franz in "The Last Lesson"
Introduction:
"The Last Lesson" is a short story written by Alphonse Daudet. It is a story set in a small French village during the Prussian occupation of France in the late 19th century. The story revolves around the last French lesson in the village school taught by M.Hamel.
Why M.Hamel didn't scold little Franz?
M.Hamel was a very strict and disciplined teacher, but surprisingly, he did not scold little Franz for coming late to school, which was not his habit. The following reasons can be attributed to M.Hamel's behavior:
1. Understanding the gravity of the situation:
M.Hamel understood the gravity of the situation. The French language was going to be banned in the schools of Alsace-Lorraine, and French would no longer be taught. M.Hamel knew that this was the last French lesson and that he had a responsibility to teach it to the best of his ability. Therefore, he did not want to waste any time scolding Franz.
2. Franz's love for his mother tongue:
Franz loved his mother tongue, and M.Hamel knew this. He saw the disappointment on Franz's face when he heard that French would no longer be taught in the school. M.Hamel did not want to discourage Franz by scolding him. Instead, he wanted to encourage him to learn as much as he could in the last French lesson.
3. M.Hamel's sense of responsibility:
M.Hamel had a sense of responsibility towards his students. He knew that it was his duty to teach them as much French as he could in the last lesson. He did not want to waste any time scolding Franz, which would have been counterproductive.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, M.Hamel did not scold little Franz because he understood the gravity of the situation, he knew that Franz loved his mother tongue, and he had a sense of responsibility towards his students. M.Hamel's response was appropriate, and it helped to create a positive learning environment in the classroom.
