गिल्लू अपनी फूल की डलिया को स्वयं हिलाकर झूलता था और अपनी काँच के मानकों जैसी आँखों से कमरे के भीतर और खिड़की के बाहर देखता समझता रहता था। लोगों को उसकी समझदारी और कार्यकलाप पर आश्चर्य होता था। लेखिका का ध्यान अपनी ओर आकर्षित करने के लिए वह उनके पैरों तकजाकर सर्र से परदे पर चढ़ जाता और फिर उसी तेजी से उतरता था जबतक लेखिका उसे जाकर पकड़ नहीं लेती थी। भूख लगने पर वह चिक चिक करके लेखिका को सूचना देता था और काजू या बिस्कुट को अपने पंजो से पकड़कर कुतरता था। लेखिका जब बाहर जाती तो गिल्लू भी खिड़की के छेद में से बाहर जाता था और दिन भर गिलहरियों के झुंड का नेता बनकर डालियों पर उछलता कूदता रहता था। शाम को ठीक चार बजे, लेखिका के घर आने के समय, खिड़की से भीतर आकर अपने झूले में झूलने लगता था। लेखिका को चौंकाने के लिए वह कभी फूलदान के फूलों में छिप जाता, कभी परदे की चुन्नट में और कभी सोनजुही की पत्तियों में। वह लेखिका की खाने की थाली में से बड़ी सफाई से एक एक चावल उठाकर खाता था। उसे काजू बहुत प्रिय था। यदि उसे कई दिनों तक काजू नहीं मिलता तो वह खाने की अन्य चीजों को लेना छोड़ देता या झूले से नीचे फेंक देता था। जब लेखिका अस्पताल में थी, गिल्लू प्रतिदिन उनका इंतज़ार करता था। उसने अपना प्रिय काजू भी नहीं खाया और लेखिका जब अस्पताल से वापस आई तो उन्हें उसके झूले में अनेक काजू पड़े हुए मिले। उसने लेखिका की अस्वस्थता में देखभाल करी और अपने नन्हे नन्हे पंजों से उनके बाल सहलाता था। इस प्रकार गिल्लू बहुत ही समझदार और प्रिय था।
