Indented key vs. Bracketed key


When it comes to writing YAML files, there are two ways to define keys: indented keys and bracketed keys. Both methods are valid, but they have different use cases and syntax rules.


Indented keys


Indented keys are defined by indenting the key name one or more spaces to the right of the parent key. The value is then defined on the next line, indented to the same level as the key:



parent_key:
child_key: value



  • Indented keys are easier to read and understand, especially for simple data structures.

  • Indented keys are required for multiline strings and nested data structures.

  • Indented keys are the default syntax for YAML files.



Bracketed keys


Bracketed keys are defined by enclosing the key name in square brackets and using a colon to separate the key name from the value:



[parent_key]: value



  • Bracketed keys are useful for defining keys with special characters or spaces.

  • Bracketed keys can be used to define keys with variables, as the variable can be interpolated inside the brackets.

  • Bracketed keys can make the YAML file harder to read and understand, especially for complex data structures.



When to use each method


Both indented keys and bracketed keys are valid ways to define keys in a YAML file, but each method has its own strengths and weaknesses. Here are some guidelines for when to use each method:



  • Use indented keys for simple data structures and nested data structures.

  • Use bracketed keys for keys with special characters or spaces.

  • Use bracketed keys for keys with variables.

  • Avoid mixing indented keys and bracketed keys in the same YAML file to maintain consistency and readability.

Indented key - *These are known as yoked key .
                        *They wont go taxa.
                        *They give visual presentation of the group.
                        *The indent key have the two lead of each                                couplet   separated   by  the couplet following the first lead that making it difficult to compare with the alternatives . 
                          *There is a wastage of paper because the keys utilize the right side of the paper and so they are expensive to print .

Bracketed key.*These are known as parallel keys .
                        *They will group taxa.
                         *They don't give a visual presentation of the group.
                         *The bracketed key keep the two leads of every couplet for and easier comparison of the alternatives .
                          *The bracketed keys utilize the space in each page efficiently and so they are cheaper to print .
