The story "The Last Lesson" is about the importance of the mother tongue and revolves around the feelings of nationality. It has been narrated by a boy named Franz who was a school going boy. He didn't like to go to school or study the French lesson from his teacher M.Hamel. One day while going to his school he came to know that the French districts of Alsace and Lorraine have been conquered by Berlin. Also from that day towards, the order was passed that French would not be taught in the schools. The German language was made mandatory in the schools. This news made the whole city feel distressed. They were very sad that their native language has been taken away from them. Language denotes the feeling of nationalism and is a symbol of dignity. Franz never wanted to go to school but it was on that day that he started to grow an interest in the language. M.Hamel, on the other hand, was also very sad about the news. It was the last lesson of the French. The story ends with the line written by M.hamel on the blackboard 'Vive La France!' which means 'long live France'.
