Full form: DNA, ATP, RNA
DNA - Deoxyribonucleic Acid

DNA is a long, double-stranded helix-shaped molecule that carries genetic information in all living organisms. It is composed of four nitrogenous bases - adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine - and a sugar-phosphate backbone.

  • Adenine pairs with thymine, and guanine pairs with cytosine, forming base pairs that hold the two strands of DNA together.

  • DNA replication occurs during cell division, where the strands of DNA separate and new complementary strands are synthesized using the existing strands as templates.

  • Mutations in DNA can lead to genetic disorders and diseases, and DNA sequencing can be used to identify these mutations.

ATP - Adenosine Triphosphate

ATP is an energy-carrying molecule found in all living cells. It is composed of a nitrogenous base, adenine, a sugar molecule, ribose, and three phosphate groups.

  • ATP is produced during cellular respiration, where energy from food molecules is converted into ATP.

  • ATP releases energy when the bond between the second and third phosphate groups is broken, creating ADP (adenosine diphosphate) and a free phosphate group.

  • ATP is used for various cellular processes, such as muscle contraction, protein synthesis, and active transport across cell membranes.

RNA - Ribonucleic Acid

RNA is a single-stranded nucleic acid that is involved in protein synthesis. It is composed of four nitrogenous bases - adenine, guanine, cytosine, and uracil - a sugar molecule, ribose, and a phosphate group.

  • RNA is transcribed from DNA during the process of transcription.

  • There are three types of RNA - messenger RNA (mRNA), transfer RNA (tRNA), and ribosomal RNA (rRNA).

  • mRNA carries the genetic information from DNA to ribosomes, where protein synthesis occurs.

  • tRNA brings amino acids to the ribosome during protein synthesis.

  • rRNA forms the structure of ribosomes and catalyzes the formation of peptide bonds between amino acids.
