It's essential to distinguish between terms ‘dimension’ and unit. And for that here is an example :
the dimension ‘length’ expresses the qualitative concept of linear displacement, or distance between two points as an abstract idea ,without reference to actual quantitative measurement. The term ‘unit’ indicates a specified amount of quantity . Thus a metre is a unit of length, being an actual amount of linear displacement and so also is a kilometre. The metre and kilometre are different units since each contain a different amout of length, but both describes length and therefore are identical dimensions. Let me express ’em in symbolic forms .
x meters = [L] (a quantity of x metres has the dimension of length )
x kilometres = [L] (a quantity of x kilometres has the dimension of length )
x metres doesn't equal to x kilometres
[ x metres ] = [ x kilometres ] ,that means the dimension of x metres is the same as the dimension of x kilometre.

The difference is quite subtle and of little practical importance if done accordingly.
The difference is that a unit incorporates a property of scale while dimension doesn't. For example in the case of length it could be measured in meters, decimeters or kilometers, but nevertheless the dimension is length.
If you use unit-analysis instead of dimensional analysis you would have to take into account that different units of length only differs by a (dimensionless) constant.
