Types of Viruses:
- Influenza Virus: Influenza virus, commonly known as the flu virus, infects the respiratory system and can cause symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, and body aches. It spreads through respiratory droplets and can lead to severe complications, especially in vulnerable populations like the elderly and immunocompromised individuals.
- HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus): HIV attacks the immune system, specifically targeting CD4 cells that help the body fight off infections. If left untreated, HIV can progress to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), which weakens the immune system and makes individuals susceptible to opportunistic infections and cancers.
- Zika Virus: Zika virus is primarily transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. It gained global attention due to its association with birth defects, particularly microcephaly in infants born to mothers infected during pregnancy. Symptoms of Zika virus infection include fever, rash, joint pain, and red eyes.
- Hepatitis B Virus: Hepatitis B virus infects the liver and can cause both acute and chronic hepatitis. It spreads through contact with infected blood or bodily fluids and can lead to liver cirrhosis, liver cancer, and other complications if not properly managed. Vaccination is available to prevent hepatitis B infection.
- Ebola Virus: Ebola virus causes a severe and often fatal illness in humans and other primates. It is transmitted through direct contact with the blood, body fluids, or tissues of infected individuals or animals. Symptoms of Ebola virus disease include fever, severe headache, muscle pain, fatigue, diarrhea, vomiting, and hemorrhage. Outbreaks of Ebola have occurred in several African countries, leading to significant public health concerns.
