The reason they did this was because they hated the old way of things and wanted it to change. Another reason that the revolution started was an economic crisis in the monarchical government.

John Locke thought that government should protect man's natural rights life, liberty, and property. Voltaire thought that everyone needed their own voice(freedom of speech), and that Church and State should be separate entities. Jean Jacques Rousseau thought that people were naturally peaceful and orderly, and that the government should have a social contract with the citizens.
