The Indian desert extends towards the Western edge of the Aravali ranges.  It is a moving sandy field embraced with sand knolls. This area experiences below 150 mm per year rainfall, which is very low. The arid climate and moderate vegetation are the two most important features of the Indian desert. The evaporation rate in this area is very high thus during the summer season many rivers disappear into the sand. River Luni is one of the important rivers that flow through the Indian desert but due to high evaporation rates it disappears in the sand and does not reach the sea. The Indian desert is popularly identified as the Thar Desert.

(a) It covers almost the whole of Rajasthan state.

(b) It lies towards the western margins of the Aravali Hills.

(c) Its vast expanse is covered with sand dunes which their shape day in and day out.

(d)It has arid climate with very little vegetation.

(e)  During the rainy season small streams are sometimes seen for a short-while which disappears again in sand after the rains are over.

(f) Luni is the only large river in this area.

(g) Crescent shape dunes which are called Barchans are a prominent feature of the Indian desert.
