Distance and Displacement



  • Distance is the total length covered by an object, irrespective of its direction.

  • Displacement is the change in the position of an object from its initial position to its final position in a specific direction.



Numerical Examples:



  1. A car travels 10 km north, then turns and travels 5 km east. What is the total distance and displacement covered by the car?

  2. Total distance covered = 10 km + 5 km = 15 km

    Displacement = √(10² + 5²) = √125 km ≈ 11.2 km (in a northeast direction)


  3. A person walks 5 m east and then 3 m west. What is the total distance and displacement covered by the person?

  4. Total distance covered = 5 m + 3 m = 8 m

    Displacement = 5 m - 3 m = 2 m (in the east direction)



Average Velocity



  • Average velocity is the ratio of total displacement to total time taken.

  • It is a vector quantity and has both magnitude and direction.



Numerical Examples:



  1. A car travels 40 km north in 2 hours and then 60 km south in 3 hours. What is the average velocity of the car?

  2. Total displacement = 40 km - 60 km = -20 km (in the south direction)

    Total time taken = 2 hours + 3 hours = 5 hours

    Average velocity = (-20 km / 5 hours) = -4 km/h (in the south direction)


  3. A person walks 10 m north in 2 seconds and then 5 m east in 1 second. What is the average velocity of the person?

  4. Total displacement = √(10² + 5²) = √125 m ≈ 11.2 m (in a northeast direction)

    Total time taken = 2 seconds + 1 second = 3 seconds

    Average velocity = (11.2 m / 3 seconds) ≈ 3.73 m/s (in a northeast direction)



Equations of Motion



  • There are three equations of motion that relate the displacement, velocity, acceleration, and time of an object in motion under constant acceleration.

  • These equations are:




  1. v = u + at

  2. where v is final velocity, u is initial velocity, a is acceleration, and t is time.


  3. s = ut + 1/2 at²

  4. where s is displacement, u is initial velocity, a is acceleration, and t is time.


  5. v² = u² + 2as

  6. where v is final velocity, u is initial velocity, a is acceleration, and s is displacement.
