Why did Einstein and his associate write to president Roosevelt ? How ...
Introduction:
Albert Einstein and his associate, Leo Szilard, wrote a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War II to inform him about the potential development of an atomic bomb by Nazi Germany and to advocate for the United States to initiate its own research into nuclear weapons. The letter, often referred to as the Einstein-Szilard letter, played a crucial role in the establishment of the Manhattan Project and the subsequent development of the atomic bomb.

Reason for Writing:
Einstein and Szilard were deeply concerned about the possibility of Nazi Germany harnessing the power of atomic energy for military purposes. They believed that if Germany succeeded in developing an atomic bomb, it would pose a grave threat to the world and could potentially alter the course of the war. Recognizing the importance of nuclear research, they felt it was their responsibility to alert the United States government about this potential danger.

Content of the Letter:
In their letter, Einstein and Szilard outlined the scientific principles behind atomic energy, emphasizing its immense destructive power. They explained that recent research had revealed the possibility of creating a chain reaction in a large amount of uranium, leading to the release of an enormous amount of energy. They also highlighted Germany's advanced state of scientific research and their fear that Germany might be on the verge of acquiring the knowledge necessary to build an atomic bomb.

Response from President Roosevelt:
Upon receiving the letter, President Roosevelt recognized the gravity of its contents and the urgency of the situation. He established the Advisory Committee on Uranium, which was responsible for overseeing and coordinating research related to atomic energy. In October 1939, Roosevelt authorized the establishment of the Uranium Committee, which eventually led to the formation of the Manhattan Project.

Conclusion:
In response to the letter from Einstein and Szilard, President Roosevelt took significant action by initiating research into nuclear weapons. This eventually resulted in the successful development and deployment of the atomic bomb by the United States. The Einstein-Szilard letter played a pivotal role in raising awareness about the potential military applications of atomic energy and catalyzing the American effort to build an atomic bomb during World War II.
