There were different phases in relationship of grandmother and grandson but the most important aspect was the love and care for each other that never ended.
In childhood the author used to stay with his grandma in village as his parents worked out in the city. there was a bond of friendship, love and care between the author and his grandma. they had a daily routine where the authors grandma used to wake him early in the morning and used to serve him with stale chapatis and jaggery and take him to the village school he was taught about the inscriptions and teachings of some gurus. his grandma wanted him to stay and village and learn religious beliefs and lead a simple life.
there was a turning point in there relationship when authors parents sent a call for him and his grandma to come to the city. where grandma and author were given different rooms and this was a big barrier in their relationship as they nearly had any interaction now. grandma didn't like that the author should study science fiction. she hardly talked to anyone and spent her leisure time feeding birds and listen their chirpings.
She didn't liked when author was going to study abroad she told him that she will wait for him to return and when he returned she welcomed him by thumping the drum with joy.. this shows her unconditional love for the author.. that day she never talked to anyone and started telling her beads, she was in bed and died without saying anything.
