causes of battle of plassey Related: Doc: The Battle of Plassey?
The battle of Plassey was fought in 1757 between the British East India Company and Siraj-ud-daulah, the Nawab of Bengal. At the end of the battle, Company won. The main causes of the Battle of Plassey were:

• The British East India Company wanted to establish a puppet ruler on the throne of Bengal. Knowing about this, Siraj-ud-daulah ordered the Company to not interfere in his matters. But the Company disapproved. Over- interference of the Company became the main cause of the Battle of Plassey.

• Secondly, when company disagreed, Siraj-ud-daulah marched and was successful in attacking the English factory at Kassim Bazar. When Company in Calcutta got this news, they sent an army under Robert Clive and defeated the Nawab at Plassey.

This defeat was possible because Mir Jafar, the commander of Siraj-ud-daulah cheated on him and supported the British.

Causes of the Battle of Plassey:

The Battle of Plassey was a significant event in Indian history that took place on June 23, 1757. It was a pivotal moment in British colonial rule in India and played a crucial role in establishing British dominance over the subcontinent. The causes of the Battle of Plassey are as follows:

1. Political Rivalries and Ambitions:
- The political landscape in Bengal was marked by conflicts and rivalries among local rulers and nobles.
- The Nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-Daulah, faced opposition from various factions within his own court, including Mir Jafar and Rai Durlabh.
- The British East India Company, led by Robert Clive, saw these internal divisions as an opportunity to expand their power and influence.

2. Economic Factors:
- The East India Company had established a thriving trade in Bengal, particularly in textiles and opium.
- The Company sought to maximize its profits by gaining control over the lucrative trade routes and eliminating competition.
- The imposition of heavy taxes by the Nawab on British traders and the subsequent confiscation of their goods further strained the relationship between the Company and the local authorities.

3. Military Disparities:
- The British East India Company had a well-trained and disciplined army, equipped with modern weaponry.
- In contrast, the forces of Siraj-ud-Daulah were relatively weak and lacked proper training and organization.
- The Company's military superiority gave them a significant advantage in the upcoming conflict.

4. Diplomatic Maneuvering:
- Robert Clive skillfully exploited the internal rivalries among the Bengali nobility to his advantage.
- He formed alliances with disaffected officials like Mir Jafar, promising them power and wealth in exchange for their support against the Nawab.
- Clive's diplomatic maneuvering and promises of rewards played a crucial role in securing the betrayal of Mir Jafar and other key commanders during the battle.

5. Battle Strategy:
- Robert Clive devised a cunning strategy to defeat the numerically superior forces of Siraj-ud-Daulah.
- The British forces secured a strong defensive position near the village of Plassey, utilizing artillery and entrenchments.
- Clive also took advantage of the monsoon season, which made the battlefield muddy and difficult for the enemy to maneuver.
- The use of deception and psychological warfare further weakened the morale of the Nawab's troops.

In conclusion, the Battle of Plassey was influenced by political rivalries, economic factors, military disparities, diplomatic maneuvering, and strategic planning. These causes collectively contributed to the British East India Company's victory over Siraj-ud-Daulah and their subsequent domination of Bengal and other parts of India.
